3 Advertising Mistakes to Avoid
by Kelly Boyle
The first time you begin running ad campaigns you will definitely worry about all kinds of mistakes. Anything that is novel, or new, it's going to make you feel uncomfortable almost every time. By experiencing advertising first hand, you can actually make this experience much more palatable. Most people can play mental games, control their emotions, and get through this very trying time. The more you learn about advertising, the stronger your sense of control, and comfort, will become. Just keep learning more about advertising, and you will see your confidence skyrocket.
One of the prevailing myths of online advertising is that banner ads are no longer effective. There are, however, profitable and unprofitable ways to invest in banner advertising. Suppose you start running a banner ad and are pleased with the conversion rate over the first month. Typically, though, fewer people click on this banner ad after a while. There's nothing abnormal about this, as it's likely that many people on the site are repeat visitors who are familiar with the ad by now. If, however, you run a new banner, these old visitors will once again notice it. But this time you put a different benefit in the ad copy and run it again. Since people have different concerns, you can appeal to a whole new set of prospects this way.
Less experienced online marketers are often too anxious to sell something in a hurry. Some customers need a more subtle approach, however, and aren't ready to buy something right away. You obviously wouldn't want to send people to some random or irrelevant page on your site. A sales page, however, is not always the best option. If you're a little patient and collect people's email addresses you can send your prospects to an opt-in page. A landing page is not usually designed to sell something, but to convince people to opt-in. Another option is to create a page with lots of information about your product that isn't an actual sales page. From here, you then have the option of directing people to your sales page or perhaps a landing page.
Failing to test your landing page is costing you leads and money every day. In regard to your advertising funnel, it is actually the second step, but the first impression people will have of you and what you sell. Split testing is something you need to do in order to optimize conversions and make more sales. When you do split testing, doing basic A/B testing is what you need to accomplish. You need to start with your headline. This is what people see initially. Of course you know how important your headline is - it sells the rest of the page.
It's always a good idea to learn what you can about ways to avoid making common advertising mistakes. When you know what to look for, you'll be less likely to make those mistakes in future. Don't be one of those people who starts a new idea, only to give up after realizing they've made all the classic mistakes. If you're serious about business success, you'll learn what you need and take positive action.
