Top Tips for Creating an Effective Business to business Social Media Strategy

by Ruth Williams

Social networking sites Facebook and Twitter have had a profound impact on the world of online marketing. Promoting your business online has had to adapt in order to make room for social media marketing. But online marketers have a lot on their plates right now.

With Penguin and Panda - Google's latest algorithm updates - making link building a challenge, is there really time in your day for social media marketing? And how can you build a community around your brand? Regardless of any reservations you may have, all B2B company's should be embracing social media marketing.

Here we look at five top tips for building, monitoring, and maintaining an effective B2B social media strategy:

1. Socialising

As the name suggests, social networking is all about communication. Even as a B2B business you need to be an active member of your online community. Using trending topics and Twitter hashtags, join in conversations with your followers and other users. Find out what people in your industry are talking about, and add something of value to the conversation.

It is important to remain professional, but social networking is at its most successful when there is an obvious sense of a 'human' element. Users like to see that social media pages aren't just an automated feed. This then, is one of the easiest but more fruitful ways to boost your presence on social media.

2. Content Distribution

As a marketer, you may see social media as a way to push out your content and promote your business. Being of this mindset though, is only going to be your downfall. You need to share other peoples' work, get conversations going, and talk about 'real' industry issues.

By diversifying the content you promote, you can reach out to more than just your usual customer base. You don't want to alienate your core audience, but you should be looking to offer something to everyone else too.

3. Managing Your Time

With so many sites to choose from, it can be hard manage your time between them effectively. Obviously your main marketing roles need to take priority, but the key to social media success is an active presence.

If you struggle to manage your time, dashboards such as Tweetdeck and Hootsuite are ideal for helping you out. All your accounts can be integrated into one online programme, allowing you to post as and when you need to. These dashboards also allow you to schedule posts, which is a great way to save time.

4. Audience Engagement

Your previous online marketing efforts will have already helped you to establish a sound online presence. You should make sure you tap into this, by adding social sharing buttons to your blog posts. These simple buttons let readers share your posts on Facebook, Twitter, and more without having to divert to their pages. Similarly, don't be afraid to ask your readers to share posts in your call-to-action.

Something as simple as signing off your Tweets and Facebook posts with a name is another great way to encourage engagement. This adds a human element, and lets your readers know that any questions or queries they may have will be dealt with.

5. Goal Driven

In all forms of marketing you are driven by a certain set of goals, and promoting yourself on social media is no different. Do you want to raise your company profile, increase sales, or add more people to your mailing list? Whatever you're looking to do, make sure you have a clear set of goals.

Hootsuite allows you to track the number of times your links have been clicked, which is a great way to see if things are working. If your posts aren't performing as well as you would like, this will help you shift the focus to the things that are proving successful. As any marketer knows, you have to grow and adapt to both the industry trends and what your audience want.

Social media is still a relatively new marketing approach, and one that is still growing and changing. In the B2B industry, it can prove challenging to see massive, meaningful results quickly. What is clear however, is that the value of having an active social media presence is only getting bigger. Can you really afford to be missing out?
