How to Avoid Some of the Trickiest Advertising Mistakes

by Kelly Boyle

What you will notice about the largest corporations and their advertising mistakes can be found in periodicals and the news. Don't cop out and say that your mistakes are just like those of a big corporation. You can reduce your advertising mistakes to almost nothing because you are a smaller business. You can improve your knowledge of advertising easily, and avoid the same mistakes. Proper copywriting, or at least learning the basics, can work to your benefit as well.

By figuring out what your advertising messages, you can then create subsequent messages very easily. Proper preparation is always recommended. It is a huge mistake to not know the core message of which were selling. By running broad-spectrum ads, you can actually hurt your business, more than help it in the long run. After you have defined what your core message really is, consistency and continuity will show up. You will end up targeting people that are not in your direct audience if you do this. Anytime you do a marketing campaign, or even an e-mail campaign, if your target audience is not very specific, conversions will be terrible.

A common mistake made by marketers is to assume that the only purpose of an ad is to sell something directly. So they understandably send traffic from the ad to their sales copy. You obviously wouldn't want to send people to some random or irrelevant page on your site. For many products and services, people need more convincing than just a sales page before they are ready to spend money. You will notice that most experienced marketers don't just use a sales page, but a sales funnel with several stages. A landing page is not usually designed to sell something, but to convince people to opt-in. Another option is to create a page with lots of information about your product that isn't an actual sales page. From here, you then have the option of directing people to your sales page or perhaps a landing page.

One of the classic mistakes in advertising reflects on many things such as fear and inability to understand the big picture. This happens when you are buying advertising and you have a positive ROI. So you spend $10 a day and your gross is $50 which means your net, pretax, is $40 - not bad. You can maintain that ad spend, however, you will make any more profit. You should be scaling up your advertising and making more profit. It's a mistake if you don't! If you went up to $50 a day, your gross amount of profits should increase. You can minimize your risks by testing small and conservatively.

It's always wise to learn what mistakes you could be making with your own advertising and then work on avoiding them. Then you'll have no excuse for making such easily preventable mistakes in future. Don't be like those people who try something with a half-hearted effort and then give up and start looking for something else. That is what amateurs do, and you don't want to be like that if you intend to stay in the game.
