Understanding the Importance of Usability

by Gary Klingsheim

Have you ever heard of the term usability? The basis behind usability is simple: make sure the your website is as functional as possible for your customers. That's it - easy, right? It's good customer service and it's a way to help your customers to find what they're looking for on your website. If this is such a simple concept, why are there thousands of tutorials and websites that are dedicated to helping businesses achieve usability? The concept of usability is easy, the reality of usability, however, can be much more difficult. These tips, however, may help dramatically improve your usability level.

Before you launch

One thing that any design expert will tell you is to make sure that you do a usability study before you even consider putting your website live. Fortunately a usability study is actually very easy to do. The goal of this type of study is to have people test your design in order to make sure that they are able to navigate the site easily and that they are able to find whatever they want to find when they visit the site. Yes, you're asking them to check how usable your design is. If you already have an e-mail list for your business, offer some of the customers a chance to be a beta tester for your site, and make sure you give them some sort of reward for doing so. If you do not have an e-mail list, look to social media sites like Facebook to help. It's likely that you will find a number of friends online who are more than happy to help you test out the design of your website.

After launch

So you've launched your website, that means you're all done looking at usability for the site, correct? Actually, that is definitely incorrect. Usability should be looked at as an ongoing process. You should always ask your customers to get involved in helping you make sure that your site design is as usable as it could possibly be. Always ask for critiques and feedback on your site so that you can make any changes that are necessary. You may even want to offer some sort of reward for customers to give helpful feedback.

Upgrading your technology on your website can be fine, but make sure you think about usability here as well. Progressive enhancement is what you're after, and you want to make sure that your site looks good at the core level and that everyone is going to be able to use it. For example, if you were to input a program that not all browsers can handle, you will be alienating some users. Make sure that you test all new technology on every browser possible so that you can avoid alienating any customers.

Utilizing Resources

Usability is a well-discussed topic. There are literally thousands of sites devoted to improving usability, some more technical than others. In addition to that, though, there are also hundreds of print and ebooks that are devoted to the same topic, and new research comes out on an almost daily basis. Staying on top of that research is really the key to maintaining usability throughout your site, even in today's changing landscape. If you don't understand usability or you don't have the time to address it, turn to your web design professionals to ensure your site stays as user-friendly as possible at all times. They'll be able to guide you from update to update to help make certain your users can connect with your site and boost your sales.

Staying on top of everything can be tricky, which is why many people look to web design experts to help them with their website. It is the job of these experts to stay on top of all of this type of research, and utilizing them as a resource may be one of the best moves you ever made for your site. Aim to make your site as user-friendly as possible and to maintain it as often as you can and you will see a huge difference when it comes to the revenue made on your website.
