Does Your Market Strategy Stink?

by Jonathan X. Livingsworth

Are you having trouble developing a sound marketing strategy or having doubts about your current one? I recently read an post on David Horne's website that aims to help avoid these problems by pointing out five major marketing strategy no-no's:

Not knowing where you currently stand

Many companies are so focused on where they want the brand to go that they forget to look at where it is right now. You need to know where you stand now before you can even think about the future. Horne suggests, "taking inventory of the present" as a way to figure out how your marketing strategy can improve your brand's position in the marketplace.

Having a strategy that is too loosely defined

A strategy that is too broad or unclear leads to misinterpretation, misunderstanding and inaction. Make sure that your plan is precise so that everyone involved knows their role and how to execute it. This also allows for more freedom with regards to the creativity of the campaigns.

Having an inflexible strategy

Horne reminds us that precision doesn't mean over specifying. Your strategy should provide the ability to adapt so that changes can be made when necessary.

Having a boring strategy

Don't bother creating boring content. It turns off customers and wastes money. Take risks. Get noticed and be creative to keep that attention.

Making your strategy over-complicated

People glaze over when inundated them with too many facts and figures. As Horne says, "There doesn't need to be 23 benefits to describe your brand." Keep things simple so that your customer connects your brand with one word or feeling, making you unforgettable in their minds.

You can achieve marketing success if you manage to steer clear of these five common errors. Remember to keep clear objective in mind and be creative!
