Digital Marketing- Don't Forget the Basics!

by

Doris Clark wrote an interesting article on Forbes website about the secrets to digital marketing and the general take-away is: Don't forget the basics. The online marketing universe is ever changing; there are always new technologies, always new trends. And while it would be nice to keep up with the Jones' their grass may not be as green as you think.

Just because something appears flashy and new doesn't mean it's the best strategy for you. And while you may believe that the Jones' have an edge on your company because of this fancy, new technology, you might be surprised to discover that they haven't invested as much time and resources into that technology as you think. Remember, with every new technology is an inherent risk. Don't be so quick to try the latest and greatest in digital marketing that you forget about the tools that have gotten you to where you are today.

Email is not dead. There are those who thought that email would become irrelevant as social media began to gain popularity. But email is just as relevant as ever. Email in an important tool to connect businesses and their customers. According to Allen Bonde, CMO for The Pulse Network, "email is more essential than ever; it is an amplifier for socialbecause it is a delivery mechanism for the rich content that you're creating."

Small manageable bits of content. Ever go online to read a blog or come upon an article and before you even read it, you instinctively scroll down to the bottom up the page to decide whether or not you are even going to take the time to read it? Come on, rise you hand. Most of us are guilty of doing that. When we decide to take the time to read something online, we want to keep it short, sweet, and to the point. Keep your content clear and concise. Tell your readers what they need to know and nothing more; they will thank you for it.

The online world is a web. Email, social media, mobile applications and technology; they are all connected. You can't be a part of one and not include the other two. . It is your decision how much of each technology that you will incorporate into your strategy but each tool works together to allow your business to obtain the best results.

Quality content is as good as gold. Inbound marketing is successful when an emphasis is placed on creating quality content that is interesting and engages customers. Great content brings customers to you. Bonde believes that "content attracts business, and allows you to engage productively with other people." Whether it's a podcast, infographics, a written review, or a blog post, what you say and how you say it directly correlates with how potential customers receive and interact with you.
