Great Small Business Marketing Ideas That Work

While we'll be publishing a series of content on small business marketing ideas, I want to start by talking about some things that really need to change in the industry - and some mistakes a lot of business owners make in the meantime.

This may sound funny, but the first thing is that you need to do exactly the opposite of what you've traditionally been told to do for your market. If you are a traditional marketer, or you work with a traditional marketer, they're going to argue with you - because they've been taught to do what "works" which turns out to be the status quo.

I'm here to tell you that when you set yourself apart by doing exactly the opposite of what everyone else is doing, you immediately have a better effect, because people are now paying attention. It's not the same old, same old - it doesn't look the same, it doesn't sound the same, it doesn't read the same, it doesn't feel the same as everything else out there.

We have worked with clients in the past who just didn't want to step outside their comfort zone and try something different. They were taught that there was a "right way" to do things in their industry, so that's what they always did. But when they tried something different, they saw great results! Now thinking outside the box takes some creativity and brainstorming, but it's definitely worth the time in the long run.

This is a no-brainer, but it's a huge mistake business owners make. Don't pay for advertising that doesn't pay you back! That goes for anything. I'm not going to make any friends with this statement, but I include networking meetings as a form of advertising. And if you're spending a ton of time at meetings, hoping for new business, and all anyone else seems to care about is getting theirs, stop wasting your time. And if you're one of those people, stop wasting their time, too.

If you are placing advertisements in magazines, periodicals, newspapers, Yellow Pages, flyers, little magazines that go out in your community, and you're not seeing any return on your investment - stop. Stop paying for them. Do not pay for things that do not pay you back - that is a business loss, and you don't want to take a loss in business, you want to make a profit! That's the whole point. So don't pay for advertising if it doesn't pay you back.

Lastly, in talking about small business marketing ideas, it's important to keep it simple, but complicated. What I mean is this: your marketing messages should not make people have to think. Tell them why you're the best, then tell them what they need to do to hire you/buy from you. It has to be super simple.

People need to be told what action to take - and obviously it needs be much more compelling than that. But when you have a headline, you immediately need to have a call to action. Brochures don't work anymore - this isn't the type of marketplace where just reading a brochure is going to change someone's mind. They need to know instantly - within two seconds - if they're going to be interested in you or not. And if they're not, they're going to move on. So you need to grab their attention and you need to tell them what they need to do next to move forward with you. Keep it really simple.

But on the other hand, you want to make it complicated - in the back-end communication and follow up. You should have multiple channels set up to communicate with your customers and prospects, so that you can speak with them in many different ways.

We're going to get into email marketing and mobile marketing in the next article, but think about your current advertising and your current marketing - Are you over complicating it in your messages, but under-complicating it in your follow through? Because it's really important that it actually should be the exact opposite. You want to keep it simple in your messages and you want to make a complicated on the back-end.
