Transition Man and Friends Success Series Interviews of James Malinchak

"The Art of Networking"

Part 5 of 8

Johnny: Ok

James: One affinity could be that you were an ex-Air Force pilot. What you would want to do is join groups where there are ex-Air Force pilots or ex-Air Force enlisted people. The affinity is the Air Force. We were both in the Air Force or we were both in the Navy together. You want to joint groups. I have one guy who I coached. He was a stockbroker and he was trying to prospect and get new people. He was going to any function he could go to. I said tell me a little about your background. He said, "Well I was an Air force pilot." I said perfect. Here is what we are going to do. I assume there are particular associations for ex-Air force pilots, ex-military people, ex-pilots, and current pilots. He is like, "Oh yes, I never thought of it." He went and looked and found about 30 different organizations associated with an ex-military person, an ex-Air force pilot, and an ex-pilot in general or a current pilot. He joined all those because that's an affinity. Now he could go and when he's there talking to these people he can talk to them about what its like to fly a plane or be in the military. This is something they have in common. Then I instructed him to do now that he was a member of such groups, start offering to do free financial seminar planning's but make it real specific. For you one group of ex-Air Force pilots we're going to give you a free retirement seminar for ex-Air Force pilots. That was the title of it. We're going to show you how to roll over your pension, what to do to make sure you don't get screwed out of your pension when you're rolling it over from the Air Force to a personal retirement account. We made it real specific for pilots. He took off and started dominating. Within two and a half to three years he was doing a million and a half in business. Before that he was doing about a hundred thousand.

Johnny: All from learning those type of strategies.

James: Really the key was to start picking a niche and like Mark Victor Hansen for Chicken Soup for the Soul says "pick a niche and grow rich." He picked a niche. I say pick a niche based on an affinity that you have with that niche. For him it was pilot, Air Force pilot, military. For me basketball, football, baseball, sports right? Then go after the people in that niche.

Johnny: Basically when people are trying to network one of the first things they need to start doing is doing an assessment of their own personal background and see where their experiences come from.

James: Excellent point Johnny. Definitely 100 %. Most people just run out and attend a few function. No. No. No. What does Stephen Covey say? 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, which is an excellent book. Stephen Covey always says, "Sharpen the saw" meaning sharpen the saw first before you cut. The second thing he says is measure twice, cut once. Measure twice meaning you plan it right before you swing the ax or use the saw. What I say is you measure first and you plan before you get out there and just begin doing your networking and wasting lots of time.

Johnny: Now that we sat up there and we've done an assessment of ourselves and determined what our skills and talents are and now we're at the networking event, what if I'm someone who's shy and introverted? What could I do to get myself speaking with other people?

James: Great point. Let me step back because this is a big mistake people make. They still just show up at the event. Let's talk about before you ever get to the event. Before you get to the event you want to write down three things. Number one some goals you want to accomplish as a result of being at this event. You're going there with a mission, a purpose. You're not just going there to eat roast beef sandwiches. You're going there with a purpose. If you don't know where you're going how can you expect to get there. That is one of my favorite quotes. I am saying plan what you want to accomplish before you go there. I want to come away with ten business cards of Air Force pilots.

The second thing you should do is try and find out, if you possible can, who might be there at that event. You may do a little research and one of the ways for instance if you're a member you could call up and get a directory of all the members of that organization. You could find out and find out a number of of the people who might be there.

The third thing you should do is set a goal on who you think could be there who you would like to meet. I live here in Las Vegas and I see the President of the Belaggio Hotel is gonna be there. I've always wanted to meet him and my goal is I'm going to meet him. I don't care what I need to do. I'm going to walk up somehow and meet him and more importantly get him to remember me. I need to do something or say something. Here's the easiest way to get people to remember you. It's to learn things about them that most people don't know about. With the Internet today it's so easy.

I could walk into an event and say, "hey Mr. Campbell. James Malinchak. I'm with XYZ organization. You don't know me but I've had a goal that I wanted to meet you for some time. I admire some things you've done in the community like raising $ 50, 000 for the American Cancer Society Golf Classic last year." Now wouldn't that just knock your socks off?

Johnny: Absolutely. For you to already know something about me.

James: It demonstrates that I truly am interested in you. Also, Mr. Campbell I sat in your talk that you did about 8 months ago when you discussed transition and change and I just wanted to say that was profound. Do you have a book on that that I can get? Wouldn't that just wow you?

Johnny: Yes

James: Because it shows people are interested in you. We love to hang around people who are interested in us.

Johnny: Absolutely
