James Malinchak's Network Yourself To The Top Tips

by Rubin Price

One of the best ways to get ahead in the business world, where most people have similar qualifications and are fighting for the same cut of the marketplace, is to network. To network your way to the very top, take the sales pressure off. You take the sale pressure off by meeting your target client in a relaxed social environment other than an office or boardroom. You don't even officially talk business with them - it's possible to network your way to the top one round of golf at a time!

So how do you do it? Well the first thing you must do is to identify your potential average client set. What do they do? Where do they socialize? Whether they are of the sport's bar or country club set, once you have identified them, you need to get yourself into the same social circle. Is your potential client set the kind to hang out at art exhibitions? Put your name on the mailing lists of several large galleries so you will be informed of upcoming events. Determine what charities are supported by your potential client's. Put your name on their newsletter list.

If your research indicates the client plays any sport, make sure you can play it or at least talk about the sport before you begin inviting the client out! Take some tuition. Same with the arts, do your homework so that the potential client will take you seriously! Once you've had some general contact with the client set, you have to become a part of their social set. This is networking at its best. Network your way to the top without sales letters or sales techniques. In many social situations, the conversation is going to inevitably get around to what you do. This is where you let them know what profession you're in.

In the corporate world networking is a well-known technique and so by handing someone your business card, they will either keep it if they think they might need your professional services at some point, or they will file it somewhere. If they file it, they probably would not have responded to a sales letter either so there's nothing lost.

Networking your way to the top means getting out there and being social. If you have got leadership qualities, you are halfway there! You smile, socialize, and mention that you have got a particular promotion that is popular. You hope they will rise to the bait and ask about it.

Although you can probably find a training course on networking, the main skills needed are good research techniques and excellent communication ability. The best way to foster these skills is practice, hands on practice getting to know people and genuinely being vested in them and their business. This, along with good people skills, you result in you networking your way to the top in no time!
