Developing an Internet Marketing Strategy

by Max Andersen

There are two main components to effectively marketing your business online. First of all, you need a website, but not just any website, you need a really GREAT website. The second component revolves around understanding that no matter how great a website you have, unless people know it is there and can find it easily, you have a great looking billboard on the road to nowhere.

Develop a Great Website

Your first goal is to develop the very best website you can afford. Do not cut back through making false economies, for instance in using poor quality images or poorly written content. If you can afford the cost, make your graphics and text message the very best you can afford: make the product front and center and do not forget, the main goal of your website is to sell, sell, SELL!

I cannot understate this: don't go for good enough with your website. Go for outstanding!

Getting Found Online

Now you have a website, your mission is to be able to attract visitors and especially potential customers. Developing a great website is important, but you should think of a website as if it is a bill board planted out in the desert - unless someone knows it is there, you are not going to be found - and that defeats the entire object!

The 3 Primary Sources of Visitors to Your Website

There are 3 main sources of online visitors to your website: Search Engine Optimization, Paid Advertizing or PPC and finally, Social Media traffic.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and this is process of getting a high ranking for selected keywords and phrases within the search engine results. This can take time and is a continuing process requiring discipline and expertise, however, in the medium to long term this is the most effective way of generating ROI and converting traffic.

Paid advertising is PPC, or Pay Per Click. Google has a very popular ad platform called AdWords, but there are many others. PPC works by you paying to have your ads displayed alongside search engines results, and again relies on you targeting appropriate keywords and phrases. You pay for each displayed ad, but once you have exhausted your budget the ads will stop running. You control the budget, but unless a user clicks through your ad and buys from you, you lose your investment.

Social Media is where you use platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to get your message out along with your website location. ROI is very difficult to track, and generally speaking, nowhere near as effective as SEO or PPC except in quite rare instances.

So, build the very best website you can afford and then market the heck out of it. Creating a poor website and attracting lots of traffic is only likely to result in disappointed visitors. A great website with poor marketing is never going to be seen. In both bad case scenarios, you make nothing, but get them both right and you make great ROI.
