The differences and similarities between online and traditional PR

by Fidel Castle

If you are thinking of employing a PR agency, you may be wondering exactly what a PR agency does! To sum it up, a good PR agency works for you, a bad PR agency doesn't! There are several different ways though that PR agencies get their work done and find their success.

Some PR agencies specialize in digital PR which uses the internet mainly, social media, influential blogs, and SEO friendly articles to work their magic and communicate your brand and image to the public. Other PR agencies still use traditional means such as press releases, and contacts with journalists in traditional media outlets.

Although it may be tempting to assume that digital PR is the way to go, with it being newer and edgier, it may not actually be right for your business. There is still a place for traditional PR and it still works well for many products and businesses.

Digital PR and Traditional PR are both aiming for the same goal. Their job is to get your name, product, message, band, and USP out there, and build and maintain a positive reputation for your company. They both have the potential for success and failure, so there are never any guarantees. If you are looking for traditional PR, then you want to find companies that have good media relations and contacts in those traditional outlets. If you feel a digital approach is what you need, then you will want a PR company that has plenty of experience and knows where all the hot spots are online to promote your product or business.

Digital PR still requires etiquette and protocol though. You do not want to get a reputation for spamming or just blindly throwing yourself out there. Relationships are still key, they are just different. Instead of having that good contact with a journalist, it's about knowing who the most influential blogger is out there.
