Boxee TV could be worth it to those fed up with cable

by Cornelius Nunev

Cable, in a lot of ways, is a royal pain in a particular body part. Hence the increase of streaming boxes, which allow people to stream programming via Wi-Fi. One such forthcoming product is Boxee TV, a streaming set-top container that also does DVR services and can get basic channels via an HD antenna.

<strong>Boxee TV follows format of Roku, SimpleTV</strong>

There are many boxes available to hook up to your Television. Then, it will record shows if you would like it to with a DVR function, and it can access Netflix, Hulu and more through the internet.

There's a new one coming out called Boxee TV, according to Time magazine, which takes a slightly different approach. Boxee Television has existed before. The company launched a streaming TV box a couple years ago that failed miserably. However, the new one works a bit different, in that it utilizes cloud storage for DVR recordings.

You can pay $99 for the Boxee Television, making it pretty cheap, and you only have to pay $14.99 a month if you would like DVR services. That is pretty good.

<strong>Has antenna</strong>

The Boxee TV comes with apps on it for VUDU, YouTube, Pandora, Vimeo and Netflix, making it really simple on customers. It also can plug in to the cable port to be used as a DVR box. The other nice thing about it is that it has an antenna, meaning you can pick up ABC, CBS, NBC and other public broadcast stations through it.

The best part of the Boxee TV is that you do not need any external hard drive for storage since all storage is done by uploading content onto the cloud that could be accessed at any time. It can record two programs at once as a dual-code DVR recorder, though live programs cannot be stopped while you are watching them. It is more costly than the Roku or Netgear boxes that are similar, but having the infinite amount of storage is very tempting, according to CNET.

The box is nice because you have unlimited space for DVR recording. You will not need short term loans to pay the $14.99 fee for it more than likely.

<strong>Limited in the beginning</strong>

The Boxee Television comes with DVR, but that is only available in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York, Los Angles, Chicago, Dallas and Houston right now. The business plans to expand that in the next year, but not everyone has access to the DVR services.

Everyone else can only use it as a streaming device, until DVR services are available everywhere. At that it fails, since other set-top boxes for those who want to cut the cord are much cheaper and have more or the same streaming native apps.
