James Malinchak Turning The Station From Miami Vice To Millionaire

by Troy Dickson

I do not know about you, but I seriously was not the sharpest tool in the shed growing up. I had some pretty strange quirks in those days. I loved Lemonhead candies. I mean I seriously loved them. I also used to buy baseball cards just to get the gum. Remember those cards with the gum inside the packet? I couldn't get enough.

Back then, I really loved Miami Vice. James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs were the coolest guys in the history of cool. I loved Miami Vice so much that I use to try to be them, and I used to try to dress like them. Picture this: it's the middle of winter in a small steel mill town outside of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania called Monessen. I am wearing a white suit, a turquoise top, and white nurse's shoes because they were 3 bucks at the thrift store. Hey, that is all I could afford at the time. Oh, and I was not wearing any socks. In my mind, I was a Miami Beach cop. I was cool. I was Sonny Crockett.

Then, I started to dress like Ricardo Tubbs with his sharp, shiny clothing. I went so far in my senior year that I had my senior picture taken dressed like him. I was dressed like him in a bright purple suit with a purple tie, a purple shirt, a white belt, white nurse's shoes, and no socks. Now, if you are laughing, do not laugh too hard because I know somewhere you have a shoebox filled with some funky pictures of your own. Maybe you have a photo with some puffed-out 80's hair, leg warmers, or Hammer time pants hidden away, too, so do not laugh too hard least someone exposes your jacked up pictures.

What's the point of all this? Look, it does not matter where you started in life. It is where you decide you want to finish. I may have started out as a Miami Vice wanna be, but I turned out alright. Earning the right to call myself a millionaire is a trait of which I am proud. Especially since I know I started out a regular steel mill kid from a small town like so many other people. I learned from a good friend of mine, Professor Joe Martin that it is not where you start in life and that it is not even where you are right now. If you do not like where you started in life or where you are right now, you can change it. I have learned that you can change the dial on the station for who you are in life.

You can change your life. I realize that in trying to change the dial, you might not get a clear station at first. I realize that, in the beginning, you might feel like a wanna be instead a real entrepreneur. Regardless of the static, you have to sing along with the music. You simply have to fine tune the dial on how you see yourself, think about yourself, and appreciate yourself. Sooner or later, you will be singing along loud and clear. Remember, it is not where you started in life; it is where you decide to finish.
