Critical Questions You Must Ask Any Website Design Company

by Eric Spellmann

You will run into a number of good web design firms. Choosing one can be difficult. However, if you do a little preparation before you start calling, the process of finding the perfect company becomes much easier. So, let's start at the beginning:

Ask All Potential Web Designers These Questions:

What other websites have they created? Ask for a portfolio. Ask if they have built any sites similar to what you are wanting. Are these sites easy to navigate? Do they have a "national quality" look to them?

Where are they located? Can you visit their office? This may seem like a weird question, but as you will see, it reveals a lot. In the web design industry, workers are not required to have certifications or licenses to build sites. In other words, anyone can have a full-time job by day and label themselves a professional webmaster in their off-hours. When you ask for a meeting at their office, you will immediately be able to measure how stable and secure their "business" really is.

How long does a typical website project take? You will get a broad range of answers on this one. Of course, the answer depends on the complexity of your project. If you only need a few pages of information published, your site can be ready in a matter of weeks. However, if you need some interactive elements (blogs, forms, shopping carts, etc), understand that the process could take longer.

What is their rating with the Better Business Bureau? Have other people had good or bad experiences with them? Only do business with companies that have an "Accredited" rating if possible.

Who does the website belong to when it is complete? Legally, who owns it, you or the designer? Surprised? Most people don't realize that the person who built your site, in most cases, has the legal rights (ownership) of YOUR site. Even though you paid for it, it doesn't belong to you. The only way to protect yourself in these situations is to require the designer to release all ownership holds on it...in writing. Don't play games with this. You don't want your site held hostage if you ever try to leave the designer...

Do you have the ability to update the website yourself? Depending on your technical ability and desire, you may want to update parts of your site yourself. Find out exactly what parts of the site you can update and which parts must be updated by the web design company. While various web design companies offer varying degrees of customer updating, there is no standard. Get specifics.

What about getting found in Google? Will the designer build your pages in a way that make them search engine "friendly" for certain words? Sometimes, web firms consider that service, often called "search engine optimization," to be a separately chargeable service. So, find out if it is included. Remember, visitors aren't just going to "show up" when you launch your site. They have to FIND you. Most designers have some sort of online promotion program. Ask about it.

Building a great website only happens when you pick the right designer. Professional web design will make all the difference in how your company is positioned online. And since the first impression most of your prospects will have of your company will originate online, having your website designed properly the first time is critical! Happy hunting!
