In the recent times the art and skill of designing computer games has witnessed immense advancements. So have the people involved in the industry, and even the skill sets that are needed to produce a video game that is entertaining and challenging. Designing a video game involves creating the content for the game and making the rules that govern it. The abilities needed for computer game designer careers are technical, creative and writing skills. Early in the development of video games, most of these tasks were usually undertaken by the same person, often called the lead programmer.

The lead programmer executed all of the computer game designer jobs needed for the game but then computer systems with better features began to develop. This led to gaming industry becoming a lot more complex. There are many different job functions which now fall under the category of computer game design. The different positions available for junior game designers are level designer or environmental designer and systems designer or game mechanics designer and also report writing and game documentation. Most video game designers started in the industry as game testers, so they have got experience in the kinds of design errors that usually happen while designing beta video games.

Besides planning the original idea and vision for the brand new game, the lead designer is also responsible for coordinating all the work of the junior game designers who shall be working on a variety of tasks. The lead designer makes the key decisions and makes sure that all the members of his team are communicating well. Once the programming for the video game is ready, the lead designer will then present his team?s efforts to outside agencies or departments. This position necessitates somebody who is both creatively and technically competent. The lead designer is usually responsible for coordinating the documentation of all aspects of the game production process.

The junior designers whose job it is to balance and design gameplay mechanics are named as systems designers or game mechanics designers. A position that has come into prominence as video games become more complex is that of environment designer or level designer. This position concentrates on developing the environment, missions and game play levels for the video game. A junior designer is often delegated to construct the user interface design. A writer is often employed as part of the design team so as to script a variety of items for the computer game, including dialogue, narrative, journals, commentary, hint system and packaging content.
