Changing Critical Relationships
by Saleem Rana
Dr. Michelle Skeen, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist, joined Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx on L.A. Talk Radio to discuss her new book, "The Critical Partner."
Based on utilizing personal schemas, her book is intended to gradually change unhealthy relationship patterns. The author talked about how she wrote it to help people find the love they need in a relationship. The book is designed to help both partners.
Dr. Skeen mentioned a recent YouTube video that got millions of hits as an example of unrestrained anger in a relationship. The father posted a video of his retribution against his daughter after she denigrated him to her Facebook friends. The father's act of revenge was to shoot his daughter's laptop computer. What particularly disturbed Dr. Skeen were the number of approving posts from parents for this outrageous behavior. The popular response to the video revealed how many people identified with the father's negative schema.
A critical relationship, according to Dr Skeen, is one where a critical partner verbally and emotionally attacks a vulnerable partner, imposing unrealistic standards on them. The critical partner made the other partner feel humiliated and embarrassed. By taking more responsibility for their interactions, both parties could heal a dysfunctional relationship. The critical partner needed to stop projecting their emotional insecurity on the other partner. In turn, the vulnerable partner needed to verbally express feelings of hurt and betrayal because of the criticism.
"The Critical Partner" is a book that offers numerous practical techniques to change unhealthy relationship patterns. Although this book was geared towards the vulnerable partner, the one being criticized, there is practical information for the critical partner. Some worksheets help the critical partner identify themselves as such and how to move beyond the need to criticize, while other worksheets help the vulnerable partner learn how to deflect the criticism.
On the radio show, Dr. Skeen shared suggestions on how to get to the root of relationship problems so each partner can get the love that they desire. She also offered relationship ideas for readers who called in to the show with questions and comments.
