Online Marketing Tips: How to Handle Criticism

by Mason Duchatschek

How should you handle people online who make efforts to refute, discredit or ridicule your content? Without a doubt, you are likely to have rivals and competitors who have a vested interest in harming your online reputation. Not all intentions are malicious. Some individuals are just bored jerks who go online and try to initiate commotion to entertain themselves.

In any case, if you are attempting to establish an online presence using new media and social media tools to build your business or build your authority as a subject matter expert online, then you will need a strategy. Of course you can just erase or get rid of negative comments. You can also set up account profiles to screen out negative comments before they get posted. But, are those the best ways to handle negative remarks or criticism? Perhaps the answer is no.

Some time ago I got to meet Paul Colligan at an online marketing meeting in California. He is extremely well known for his work and vision in the social media marketing and video marketing arena. Then I told him about a company based out of St. Louis, Missouri that offered home drug test kits online called TestMyTeen.com.

When it comes to the idea of parents administering home drug tests, it's not difficult to imagine how many people, particularly drug users, are openly critical of TestMyTeen.com. The comments on social media sites, blogs and articles related to TestMyTeen.com are often filled with hate and criticism for obvious reasons. Instead of being held back by criticism, Paul saw ways to grow because of it.

Paul suggested to me that leaving a lot of the pro-drug use comments for all to see might be a good way for TestMyTeen.com to show just how many strong supporters of drug use and the drug culture really exist. Parents who had no idea how pervasive, persuasive and motivated drug users were could learn that lesson first hand, directly from the types of users their kids were interacting with on a regular basis.

The more vocal critics of home drug testing became with their comments, the more they demonstrated the significance of the problem TestMyTeen.com was trying to solve. Moms and dads could discover for themselves how simple it was for kids to get exposed to drugs and how committed drug users were to sharing their lifestyle with teens who hadn't "experimented" yet.

Sometimes it is better to "love the hate" and fight whatever urges you have to silence your vocal critics online by erasing their remarks or preventing them showing up in the first place. Regardless of whether or not your critics like it, you can transform remarks intended as obstacles into your competitive advantage.
