Plain storage containers attempt to dissuade smokers

by Kayla Holman

Smoking has always been a double-edged sword. Some people fell into the habit while using the tobacco product as a means of acceptance and admiration among a group of friends while others have always hung on to the draw of nicotine. Australia hopes to end their country's relationship with tobacco products through packaging. Hopefully plain box storage containers wield the power to end addictions.

One's appearance is often thought of as one's livelihood. The same thought can be applied to product packaging. Without means to stand apart from the competition consumers may not be drawn to purchase any brand of cigarettes. The law requiring cigarettes to be packaged in plain box storage containers could hit the tobacco industry hard.

The plain box storage containers that Australian lawmakers are planning to package cigarettes in aren't as plain as their name may lead on. Clean and sterile panels are as basic as you can get when it comes to a flying-under-the-radar design, but the government has other plans. Though void of company logos and other markings, the storage containers will be strategically decorated with the intent to repulse prospective buyers.

Interestingly, the proposed plain storage containers are anything but plain. The connotation of the word "plain" brings to mind sterile and clean looking storage containers. I may be alone on this, but I don't think olive green (research revealed this to be the most repelling color) storage containers and large graphic health warnings quite fit the plain bill. "Uniform" may be the more appropriate word, allotting only two lines of content on the front, to describe the brand and variety of cigarette packaged, displayed in a predetermined font style and size. Oh Australia, if only it were that simple.

Most of us are well aware that smoking is bad for the body. We've heard about the correlations to Cancer and don't really need a disturbing photo to let us know it's not a practice to keep. So, how can plain storage containers make a difference? The root of the issue isn't based on the appearance of the storage containers but instead on the message they convey to consumers. Altering the message and meanings of the product through the packaging appearance is the key to defeating tobacco addition in Australia.

The plain storage containers model isn't only meant to disgust the eyes and appeal to the heart; it's also equipped to play mind games. Such basic packaging design may lead consumers to assume that the cigarettes inside are of a lower quality, that the taste might be lackluster and worse of all that smoking this brand might be detrimental to their worldly status (considering what class of people would smoke cigarettes packaged in plain storage containers), making smoking socially distasteful.

Not ready to give up without a fight, Australian tobacco companies plan to fight the government's mandate for plain packaging of storage containers carrying tobacco products. Given the fact that tobacco-related products kill an estimated 15,000 people a year in Australia, the company's claims of international trademark and intellectual property violations probably won't hold up too strong in court.

The Marlboro man is an iconic character in American culture, for now that is. With drastic laws regarding plain storage containers happening in Australia and rumored to take up shape in the U.K. and Canada, it seems as if only time stands between the anti-tobacco movement, via packaging and the U.S. Design is a powerful tool; but will it stand firm in the face of a dangerous product ? That's the question we all must ask ourselves.

Cigarettes are sometimes packaged in small storage containers.
