American Abstract Expressionism Is An Interesting Art Movement

by Berta Simon

Following World War II, the art movement, American Abstract Expressionism, took New York to the center of the art world. The term was coined in 1946 by Robert Coates, an art critic. It originated in 1919 in Germany. It is an intense movement, with components of Futurism, Cubism and Bauhaus.

The image of Jackson Pollock splashing the canvas with buckets of multicolored paint in a frenzy of creativity and expression of his rebellious nature comes to mind. He was considered an anarchist. Many people view his works as ingenious. Many others view it as meaningless and messy. He placed a canvas on the floor and covered it in swirls and squiggles.

An artist named Jane Frank created one beautiful work of abstract art titled Crags and Crevices. She painted it in 1961. It can be a scene of the ocean as viewed from the edge of a high cliff. It can also be seen as something else, depending on who is looking at it. It can be whatever the admirer wants it to represent.

Turning from the busy activity of a Pollock work to the Willem de Kooning series of grotesque paintings of women, it can be difficult to group them together under the umbrella of this movement. Early examples veered towards ideas of spiritualism and the subconscious. It gained mainstream popularity in the 1950s after being influenced by the Great Depression.

Most examples are in the form of paintings. It is also noted that photography and sculpture is included in the movement. The geographic area that was the focus of this art was New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. Both are leading centers in the artistic world.

Someone viewing examples of American Abstract Expressionism will have to use his or her imagination to interpret the paintings. There are critics who love it and others who consider it worthless. A bad review can sometimes affect the career of the artist. But, the average person will enjoy the work on some level. Standing back, it can be seen as whatever the admirer wants it to be. It evokes a different set of emotions in each individual. The undecipherable qualities make it different for each person who sees it.
