Ways to Select A Search Engine Optimization Backlinking Software Post-Panda
by Penny Lansbury
Developing backlinks by hand is still the greatest point for SEO results. Suss out where your prospective market is lurking and lure them back to your site with top quality content and also an open loop that leaves them wishing for more infromation (see our user's area concerning pain-baiting).
Backlinking tools abound and most nearly everyone uses them or is spending money looking for the best one.
And in these days of pandas and penguins the $6 Million question is how do you survive Matt Cutt's "Link tool slaughter"?
How does one create inbound links without getting ones site penalized?
The answer is to make use of a resource that has an extremely normal link building pattern; in other words, it should not leave a footprint.
When it comes to link building tools, my advice is to not settle for "second best".
What I Want in a Backlinking Tool:
The marketing copy and sales page must not be too sleazy-- if it's sleazy on the outside, chances are it will be sleazy on the inside. This is true for any SEO tool you buy but quite possibly most important for link building tools because links are not something you can have removed easily. If you get penalized by Google the only way to dig yourself out is with quality links or by deleting the pages that have been flagged.
The Quality of the link is very importance:
Don't tolerate spammy 3rd party link building sites. Look for good sites. Some lesser quality is to be expected with most link building packages. However I'd rather pay a little more per link and have quality.
The Details:
1. I am not so interested in a network of blogs. Google has hit those hard recently. I have no clue the quality of the link. Is it themed? Is there pagerank? Is the content descent? Those would be the three things I would want on a platform or network that is linking to my website. If I can't see the platform's linking method, I have no clue if it will hurt my rankings.
2. I prefer links from SEO platforms that drive traffic. They need to drive PR or bleed Page Rank to your website. Sites will often no-follow their links. This is just fine because it looks more natural to Google. Here is my favorite types of SEO platforms:
- major social blogging platforms, squidoo, storify, scoopit and other
- article directories and wiki submissions
- edu links - A handful of these is enough unless you have a very educationally rich topic or a topic that would appeal strongly to students (like concert ticket sales)
- web directories, business directories -
- articles on Web 2.0 blogs like Digg
- public blogs like blogger, wordpress
- twitter and other micro blogs
- social bookmarks and status updates are not that great. This is also true about forums and blog comments. These services are better than doing nothing, but you must have a ton of these links to make any impact on your website.
- content aggregator and RSS aggregator sites. These are useful and should be an automated part of your empire.
- whois, about us, website statistic sites. These links are pretty much fodder; they won't last long and are largely meaningless. However these links will register an awareness with Google and it's a good process to implement at the beginning of your site launch as you are starting to ramp up your linking campaigns. There is a place where you can get 3000 of these links for free (all at once) or for $10 you can get 30,000 of them dripped out over the course of 60 days.
3. Being able to schedule the links or throttle the speed is important. Don't go from 0 to 3000 inbound links overnight. This looks very unnatural!New sites need to build their page rank more slowly. This is true especially if they never had an inbound link campaign.
4. I want a report, once the urls to my site have been created - for two reasons:
- I want to check on the quality of the link. What does the content look like? Are there grammar errors? Do they stay true to the theme of site? What is the context of the page and content around the link they have given me?
- I want to thread the urls into an RSS feed and syndication system.
How I Proceed with Testing a New Back Link Service:
Testing backlinks can be really difficult. It is best to start with a clean domain when testing the power of an inbound link campaign. Most people will not take the time to do.
It is best to have 6 domains all with a similar Page Rank. Again, the same level of traffic and similar rankings and conversions. If you are able to keep everything else the same on all 6 sites you will have created a "baseline". Then on 3 of the sites you should test the new backlinking tool.
Give it 3 months and watch the traffic, conversions, rankings and the pagerank. That should be long enough for google to run a panda/penguin or whatever animal is the latest craze; as well as a couple of the regular monthly evaluations.
You will need to be consistent in your testing for about 6 months. This takes discipline. Most people don't have it.
Learn to use Google webmaster tools and watch for any signs of unnatural links or other messages that they now provide.
If you get a message in Google webmaster tools, you still can't be absolutely certain that the offending issue is the new inbound links you have recently added.
I try to look at analytics and webmaster tools for my entire empire once a week.
Reasonable limits: If a site is brand new when you start your 6 month test, then throwing much at it at all will raise a flag. So think about this carefully and make sure you construct a test where all of the parameters will appear as natural as possible.
