Nokia The Initiator In Roving Communications Innovation

by Barry Taylor

Nokia as a company is perhaps the largest contributor to the mobile telephony technology trends currently being experienced. Dating as far back as 1960s the company had already established itself in Finland as a mobile telephony producer. It is no wonder therefore that it is currently associated with communication. At present it is rated as second to Samsung as a producer of mobile telephony equipment and solutions. The company has a wide network of outlet in more than one hundred and twenty countries. These are supported by a work force that number approximately one hundred and thirty thousands. Generally the firm operates two subsidiaries and three business groups.

In 1971 this company established the first public mobile phone network in Finland. Earlier on the firm had provided military mobile radio communication requirements. Eventually the firm put its focus on mobile telephony and supporting infrastructure development. This was because of the apparent successful implementations and increasing demand.

To reach where it is the company has undergone transformation that included some mergers. Significantly was the merger with Salora Oy. After this the firm ventured into global implementation of the now famous global system for mobile communications commonly denoted GSM. The resulting phones which were typically second generation was capable of transmitting and receiving voice and data.

After the global communications standards there was a need to harmonize communication over the global network. International roaming standards were an innovation by Nokia to effect across border communication. With such a standard the handsets could be able to communicate with other beyond country borders which in effect achieved a global mobile network.

The advancements by the company in GSM continued. A typical GSM network was eventually implemented by 1989 the first of its kind. A little later the first GSM mobile phone was introduced into the market. This type of phone characteristically supports the voice calls roaming services and the short messaging services denoted SMS.

Apart from mobile telephony equipment production the firm has also ventured in personal computer production although not as successful as the former. The main reason may be because the demand for mobile telephony in this century is on the increase.

The Nokia 1100 was perhaps the most sold of the mobile phone types. After its launch in 2003 this model attained over 200 million sales worldwide. This opened the organization frontiers to mobile telephony advancements.

The changing market requirements are causing Nokia to rethink. For a start the brought the 7710 series on market to appease the touch screen users who wanted the new feel and departure from the traditional keypad phones. Eventually the N and E series which had more enhancements were introduced into the market. The E series was particularly introduced by the company to compete against the blackberry model. The organization has also partnered with Microsoft to load the latest models with the windows mobile operating system. Additionally consideration has been towards having products that can adapt to requirements like social networking gaming and music entertainment.
