Basic Principles of Brand Management
by Steven Harrison
Competition between the manufacturers of consumer goods has become extremely fierce. The world has become a very small place and only those that are able to create customer loyalty prosper. That is why brand management is so important. It involves the development of a strategy whereby a specific product become recognizable and favored above those of competitors.
The initial design of the label is of vital importance. The product has to be unique and it needs to make definite promises regarding its value above its competitors. It needs to convey the message that the promises made will be kept and that compromise will never be accepted. This serves to assure consumers that they can count on the label.
Once the label has been developed it is important to create awareness. Consumers need to associate the label with the product and they need to recognize the label almost subconsciously. This type of awareness is normally created by means of catchy slogans and tag lines. The message thus conveyed should be aimed at very specific target markets.
When consumers become aware of a new label they often try it out, but the real problem lies in developing customer loyalty. Shoppers need to accept the product as their first choice and they must believe that the promises made are kept. If this loyalty can be created, consumers will be less likely to pay attention to competing products.
The process involved in defining, establishing and maintaining a label is complex and requires special skill. Managers in charge of these matters need to be well versed in strategic planning, marketing and finance. It is necessary to know everything there is to know about the competitors, their products and their marketing plans.
Brand management is a science that aims to develop customer loyalty. In order to achieve this it is imperative to create expectations that will make the product the preferred choice of consumers. It is equally important to deliver on that promise in order to maintain the loyalty of the customer.
