Being able to think strategically is something that takes time and patience. It is not like an academic subject like math that can be studied through a book. It is an art that takes a lot of experience and hardship to master. Having strategic insight is something that all leaders must study if they would want to succeed in this competitive society.

When one says insight, this means that he is able to quickly have an understanding of a certain situation and knows how to react to it. It is somewhat like a foresight that will enable him to counteract with the situation. When it comes to creating a strategy, having foresight is extremely important because if one cannot foresee what will happen a few minutes into the future, he will have a hard time facing the crunch time.

As said earlier, one cannot learn this skill by merely reading a book; however, it is possible to learn it through history. During the ancient times, generals who fought at wars needed to have tactical intuition in order to conquer their enemy. The reason why there are generals who win and there are those who lose is simply because the former knew how to evaluate the situation. So by studying what the winning generals did, it is possible to be able to learn what tactic to use in certain situations. All of the strategies that were used in historic battles can be applied in modern situations.

Without a sharp mind, one will not be able to come up with any strategies at all. So it is always important to keep the mind sharp and let it get used to thinking tactically. One way to do this would be to play tactical games like chess or battleship. These days, one may even play computer games that require a lot of hard thinking.

One should not think that just because he is good in games then he will be good in real situations too. Real life is not a game and options can shift at any moment. So when in battle, it is always important to keep a clear mind that can assess situations. It is only with a calm mind that one will be able to make a move based on the current scenario.

When a person has presence of mind, he will be able to think clearly. He must first be able to assess the situation and understand what is going on. Once again, he must recall his history lesson to see if he can see any familiar patterns. If he does, he will be able to know what to do.

Then from there he must think what strategy the enemy is using against him. If he knows what strategy is used, he will know how to react. Knowing how to react will put him at the advantage because he can think ahead of the enemy.
