The Function of Electrical Transformers

by Delba Electrical

The gray-colored cylinders that you see at the top of electrical power line poles are one type of electrical transformer. These devices are designed to convert voltages between one circuit and another, hence the name "transformer." Their coils are called "inductively coupled conductors." Transformers must be cooled, and most outdoor versions use transformer oil for this purpose. Other transformers are cooled by water, forced-oil, forced-air or a combination of those methods.

These devices are essential because of the disparity in the currents carried by transmission lines. Unless transformers are used, the difference in voltage passing from one power line to another could result in serious damage. There are "step down" transformers and "step up" transformers. A step down converter starts with a high-voltage current and transforms it into a lower voltage. The step up version creates the opposite effect.

A process known as electromagnetic induction alters the current's voltage but doesn't change its frequency. Cooling a transformer properly is essential because high internal temperatures are generated during the voltage conversion. Without effective cooling, a transformer's insulation can be damaged and problems can arise. Many oil-cooled transformers have been operating for over half a century.

Transformers are also used in more places than just outside in power lines. For example, transformers might even be seen on toy train sets, changing between one voltage and another. Any time voltage needs to be changed, a transformer is the device that is often used to make this happen.

They step down a current's voltage by taking the current that enters one end of the device and passing it through a number of coils. There are progressively fewer coils as they approach the transformer's other end. As the current passes through the coils, vibrations are reduced and the current's voltage is decreased.

The electrical current coming into your home from an outside power line must enter in a particular way, which is accomplished by transformers. Current carried by power transmission lines is typically high voltage, often around 7200 volts. But your home appliances are operated by electricity that's a far lower voltage, such as 220 volts.

Many appliances and electronic devices (like computers and televisions, for example) utilize an even lower voltage, typically 110 to 120 volts. Their internal mechanisms would be destroyed if they were exposed to the high-voltage current from outside power lines. The fire risk would be high.

To prevent this type of damage, transformers reduce the current's voltage to the manageable level that's supplied by your home's electrical sockets.

Transformer Repairs

Transformer repairs are crucial for keeping the devise in peak operation. It is also crucial that you get someone to work on transformers who are certified to do so. An uncertified person trying to repair a transformer could do very serious damage to themselves or others.
