Feedback Is Crucial To Developing Your Capabilities As A Writer
by Raymond Walter Rodriguez
If you are a writer, it's tough to get started. On one hand, it can be tough to think of stuff to write all the time. Sure, many people write, but it's to put it off. You've got to be very motivated, because unless you are very lucky, it's going to take a bit of time before you see your first payday.
Another thing that's important when writing is judging your skill. After all, you are creating a product that you hope people will buy. Whether you are a novelist, non-fiction writer, article writer or a copywriter, you've got to be able to measure your skill level. On top of that, you've got to improve on a consistent basis, and get real feedback.
Other people in other jobs have it easy. If you are a programmer, for example, your programs either do what they are supposed to, or they don't. If you are a bricklayer, you can stand back and take a look at your creation. But as a writer, reading your own stuff is not the best way to get objective feedback. And without objective feedback on a consistent basis, you aren't getting any better.
As a writer, you simply have to put your stuff out there and see how people react to it. Even if you aren't selling anything yet. Put some of it on a blog, and watch for your traffic. Watch how people interact with your stuff. Over time, you'll start to see which of your pieces are attracting the bulk of the readers. Just focus on writing like this.
Article directories are another great way to quickly tell if you're any good or not. These will get you a lot more traffic, and people are more inclined to interact with a well known article directory than a blog that just sprang up out of nowhere. Also, you'll have access to a whole host of statistics that will tell you how you are doing.
It's well known that the highest paid writers, aside from world famous novelists whose books are turned into multi-million dollar movies, are copywriters. These are writers who sell. If you are a copywriter, it's fairly easy to see how good you are. And that is to measure what percentage of your readers buy the product you are promoting.
One word of caution, however, if you are choosing to do down the copywriting path. It's very easy to blame low conversions on everything except your skills. But the truth is that a good copywriter should be able to take any product, any website, and make it shine. So long as you take ownership of the outcome your create, you'll be a world class writer in no time, regardless of which path you choose.
