How Changes In Advertising Influences Local Store Marketing

by Mabelle P. O'conner

In the years before computers, the art of local marketing strategy was absolutely simple for even the most overwhelmed owner. A simple sign hung on a shingle was all that was needed to begin. However, as media began to change, so too did the demands in the store. The business that relied on track record alone was bound to fail, no matter how good the products were. As everyone understands, as soon as a bad period happens, there will be serious problems for anyone involved.

Having the Internet available as a tool can ensure that the potential catchment of customers would be enormous. While concentrating on a local market isn't as successful as aiming for national business, it can be extremely useful as a training ground. This requires some kind of knowledge of the particular market to begin with. Then again, more companies that go this route know completely the strength of the market. If there's a roofer residing in New York, then he won't want to go national with his advertising, at least to start.

While the Internet changed plenty about local marketing, there are frequent problems when using it. Still, it's never going to be the magic bullet so many people wish it to be. By not hiring competent people to run their website, the owner can put themselves at a serious disadvantage. One of the smarter investments a company owner can make is veteran IT people. They can make sure the official website is easy to navigate instead of troublesome.

While the official website on its own is great, there's something to be said about using local keywords. Traffic is the vital thing when judging a successful website, and the right keywords will spike numbers. It has room for high placing in local versions of search engines, which is often the main goal anyway. The higher the ranking, the more likely people will click on the site. It's assumed that the higher ranking is tied to better quality, so a good track record will lead to better results.

The art of local store marketing has changed a great deal since the Internet became part of our lives. What used to be something simple is now worth spending money on unfamiliar people coming in and helping. Obviously both the website and the business aspects might be too troubling for one person. Or they could, and both would be hurt by the lack of detail. In that frame of mind, it's just much easier to have someone who can handle the IT aspects while the business stuff can be dealt with by the owner.
