Overpaying for a wedding musician is a huge no-no. If you want a live band, there are some general rules and guidelines that you should follow to ensure that you get the performance you bargained for, but just remember popular bands do cost more.

At this point you should be gathering as much info about them as possible because they are other variables that determine a band's rate. Their schedule and how many shows they have booked will also affect the rate. The busier they are, the more it will cost you.
Publicity is huge for a band of any kind so if your wedding allows for it, play that angle up big time and see if they are willing to give you a lower priced based on that. They might not, but it cannot hurt to try.
Everyone has a starting point in negotiations, they list their rate, you tell them your budget and hopefully you can find a middle ground where everyone is satisfied because bands are flexible.
