The Basic Elements: Lineman Jobs

by Betsy Davenport

A tradesperson who is responsible for maintenance and construction of electric power transmission and distribution facilities is called a lineman, linesman, power line technician, or lineworker. These titles may also be used to describe workers who install and maintain cable TV, fibre optic, telegraph and telephone lines. These lineman jobs are available in many places and often include numerous duties. lineman jobs

Typically, linesmen are given work that is to be done outdoors. This differs from the duties of electricians, who have been taught how to install and maintain electrical wiring that is indoors. With the expansion of telegraph service in the 1840s also came the expansion of these jobs. Traditionally, the term was for a worker who used wood poles and string wire to set up telegraph lines.

Electrical power made this kind of job even more of a hazard. This is because the chance of electrocution increased. The years between 1890s and the 1930s is when this occupation was considered one of the top dangerous jobs. At the time, nearly one out of three workers died while on the job, most often due to electrocution.

The work encompasses many duties. Power linesman are assigned to work on lines, whether energized or deenergized. If a line is considered live, or energized, they always wear some form of protection. Usually rubber gloves suffice as protection. If high voltages are present, these workers may even use hot sticks so they can maintain a safe distance.

Some uniforms have rubber insulation and the buckets in which many of these persons work from often have a fiberglass lining to offer insulation. Safety is such a concern because regardless of how live a line is, there is danger associated with this work. Protection is essential.

Lineman jobs are often focused on work related to power lines. This sometimes involves installing or replacing capacitor banks, distribution transformers, insulators and fuses. Persons who practice this work are generally able to work with electricity in a safe manner, tie knots, use rope, lift equipment and quickly adjust to different situations.
