James Malinchak Interviewed On NPR On In the Air In Nevada Community College Part 6 of 8
by Rubin Price
The following information is part 6 of 8 transcribed from the interview of James Malichak on NPR radio show In the Air.
James: All I try to do is 2 things; I try to number one tell them stories of kids just like them who made the wrong decision and where they ended up. Number 2 all I do is ask them just think about it, just think before you do it.
No one can tell you, a mother, father, teacher, professor, a friend, nobody could make that decision for you. You're eventually going to make it. All I ask is that you think before you take action. Think about what can happen because of the decision. With a little luck, that will influence you to make a positive decision.
John: Do teenagers think they have a lot of decisions to make or that's grown up stuff? I'm having fun in that part of my life. I really don't have to make a decision, a life decision until somewhere down the road. Is that some of the things you run in to?
James: What I strive to break it down to for youngsters is the simple decision is when you get into a vehicle, are you going to enter a vehicle with somebody who has been driving under the influence? Then I tell a story about somebody who got into a vehicle with a friend who was driving under the influence. That was the first decision and the second decision was they made a decision to not buckle up. Now that kid is paralyzed for the remainder of his life because the guy drinking wrecked the vehicle and the kid flew through the window, hit his shoulder as well as neck on a wall and became paralyzed from the neck down. He wasn't even drinking and yet he's the one who was paralyzed and the youngster who was driving under the influence walked away from it.
One decision to enter a vehicle with someone who is drinking or using drugs could put you in a wheelchair for the remainder of your life. It will cause you to end your life.
John: What's your book like for Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul? What's in a book like that?
James: You know, how it all came into being. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson when they introduced Chicken Soup for the Soul and then it began to do well letters would begin coming in from people around the world. There was a letter that came in and said, "I've been in the slammer for 15 years and I'm getting out in 6 months. There hasn't been a day that has gone by that I've been in the slammer that I haven't thought of killing the person who's responsible for me being in here." "My sister brought me your book and I looked at it and said what sort of garbage is this?" "Chicken Soup for the Soul" and "I threw it under my bed."
"About two weeks later I was in my cell and I sitting on the floor and didn't have anything to do and saw that book. I said my sister brought it for me and I'm not doing anything so I got on the floor, opened it up and read a story and was shocked because I liked it." "I turned the page and read another story and I liked that one." "I read another and I liked that one and then I read another and another and another." "I sat right there on the floor and read that book cover to cover three times. It's the first book I've read in 15 years being in prison."
"Your book taught me that I made some wrong decisions and I deserved to do my time and it wasn't the person's fault who convicted me and put me in here. It was my fault for the decisions that I made."
So he's writing this letter to Jack and Mark and he writes a P.S. why don't you do a book for people just like me, people in prison? We need it a lot more than anyone because people forget about us when we're in here...
