Corporate Social Media On The Rise

by Lucy Cho

Business marketing strategies have changed immensely in the past decade due to corporate social media. Where once traditional advertising and a little word of mouth were the only means of acquiring and retaining clients, advances in technology and access to it have changed marketing altogether. Once heavily relied upon, the yellow pages have all but become obsolete. Nowadays, if you want to find a dentist, plumber, attorney, or even a delivery driver, may people look no further than social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google. So, if you are looking to be at the top of the searches, you might consider obtaining the services of an SEO consultant to help you take the next big step forward.

In order to be successful, corporate social media must be aware of the changes in the market and the ways to capitalize on those changes. How prevalent is the use of social media in today's business marketing strategies? Who are the people most likely to use social media tools? Why are people investing so much time and energy into social media? What do they hope (or perceive) that they receive as a benefit?

A 2009 study funded by the Social Media Success Summit found that corporate social media is "a tool that will continue to grow in use". 88% of respondents indicated that they regularly use social media networks and 81% of them reported increased business exposure because of social media. Over half of respondents reported that they were either beginners or had only been using social media as a resource for a few months; however, they further indicated that they are very likely to continue to use social media. Most respondents reportedly used social media for business purposes between 5 to 10 hours per week.

Who are the most likely candidates for using corporate social media strategies? The 2009 study found that the age most likely to be using social media network marketing were 30 to 39 years of age. Those ages 20 to 29 years following closely behind, with people ages 50 to 59 being the least likely to use social media for business purposes. Time investment also varied for these differing age groups with people dedicating 20 hours or more per week within these age groups at 44.8%, 40.3% and 38.7%, respectively. Younger generations appeared to be more likely to use social media, being the most likely of any of the groups to spend an investment of 20+ hours per week in developing and maintaining social media connections.

And what do businesses hope to gain by using social media forums? The largest perceived benefit of the study was that 81% of respondents believed it increased business exposure. Increased traffic or conversion rates respondents believed was achieved approximately 61% of the time. New business partnerships formed in 56% of respondents and a rise in search engine rankings for 52%. Many also reported that qualified sales leads increased for 48% of respondents. And at least 45% of respondent believed that there was a reduced marketing cost and for 35% of respondents, social media networks helped them close business.

The bottom line is this: if your business plans to jump into the world of corporate social media or even revitalize its current campaign, an SEO consultant may be a wise investment of both time and money.
