Digital Printing Trend

by Steve Zones

We all know how the computer revolution has changed the way we work and live and of the subsequent effects it has had on our lives. Similarly the same computers are radically changing the norms in the printing industry too and this revolution is called Digital printing.

In the early fifteenth century, the 1st publishing press was designed by Gutenberg. During those early days it was a very sluggish and high-priced process to print anything and the demand for the right way to quickly print limited run material in a cheap way was high. Before pcs, it was tough to print short run four color material, considering that set up expenditures, not forgetting the set up time that added to the material expenses, was extremely high.

The union of the old technology i.e. the printing press along with the new technology pc's, resulted in a different and interesting part of printing Digital printing technology. This latest technology with a paradigm change in printing technology makes the thing that was believed impossible, possible. This combining of the new and old technologies, has cast together the precise answer that print customers worldwide required, a thing that the industry sector cannot do without now.

To comprehend electronic printing better, let us fully understand analogue printing first. Standard conventional printing is analog in nature, where analog is defined as a persistently changing event just like tension, or sound, whilst an electronic system relies upon an on or an off signal, thereby rendering it more foreseeable. With regular offset printing, images are duplicated by creating a copy formally referred to as a "analogous" image.

Offset printing or Lithography uses copies of images on a hard substance (primarily metal plates) to exchange ink to print substrates (mostly paper). Likewise in screen printing, positive films and stencil negatives are employed to resemble the initial image to create prints. Moreover procedures like flexography, gravure, etching and related analog print methods make use of other forms of image transfer that is largely analogous in nature. All of such analogous strategies utilize a reproduced image(s) from the principal image.

So how does digital printing really work? With digital printing each image to be reproduced is assembled from mathematical formulas and a complex set of numbers. Thus the process of digitizing of images means capturing images using a matrix of dots commonly known as pixels. The digitized images then form the basis for a reproduction by a digitally controlled deposition of ink, toner or even exposure to electromagnetic energy such as light thus reproducing images.

The numbers and mathematical formulae also allow the possibility of algorithms to compress the date which has made possible a method of calibration of images and color management systems which help keep the images looking same no matter where they are reproduced. Adobe Inc. has also developed a common language for digital printing called PostScript. To see what PostScript looks like, try to view a PDF or EPS file in a text editor. Though the coding seems very complex and intricate, to a computer it is just a yes or no instruction.

Digital printing provides several great advantages such as faster response time and a multi color sign up system that eliminates some of the set up procedures, saving a lot of time. Another advantage is the potential of Digital printing to handle variable data printing, meaning that each printed piece can have unique info, paving the way for personalized and customized printing that will just not be feasible with the conventional analog technique of offset printing.

Hence the primary benefits of Electronic printing are as follows - Quick Turnaround, Shorter print runs and Variable data printing
