Understanding The Power Of Art

Creativity has always been part of human nature. Since time immemorial, man has been expressing himself through artworks. These simple yet exquisite forms of communication have served him well in many purposes throughout history; be they aesthetic, utilitarian, social, or cultural. They have equipped man with a culture needed to complete his being and have protected him from sticking into the madness of the world. But these are mere glimpses of the power of art. There are more than what meets the eye.

Art, as a term, came from several etymologies. It came from the Italian word "artis" which refers to mastery of form, craftsmanship, inventiveness, and the association existing between form and ideas, and materials and techniques. It is also derived from the Aryan word "ar" which means "to put together, " or "to join." Lastly, it also originated from the Greek terms "artizein" and "arkiskein" which means "to prepare, " and "to put together" respectively.

Given the definitions, it is quite conclusive that art is not accidental. Neither is it natural. What marks the very attribute that separates it from nature is its being man-made. Sure, there may be some works that are comprised of natural materials like the in the environmental arts, but they did not occur naturally. They were sculpted by the hands of man.

In addition creating artworks requires the interplay of three components namely medium, technique, and elements. Medium, in general, is any physical material used to make a masterpiece. Technique refers to the process, method, or procedure employed to come up with an artwork. The elements on the other hand are the abstract components through which we get to experience art. Examples of these are lines, color, rhythm, and space.

To appreciate <A href="http://www.artimperativequest.com">the power of art</A>works, it is best that a person knows their basic aspects. One, artworks are a result of an experience. This hints the fact that they are not just images or figures. Artworks tell something about their makers, their time, and their outlooks in life.

Another is they are a form of communication. Artworks do not just reflect beauty and history. They also send messages that can influence both man and society. They can be used as propaganda or campaign materials to gather attention or fuel a revolution.

Lastly, they are a form of human expression. Fashion, cosmetics, posters, logos, stories, dances, movies, and similar others are all mediums of expression. They can be used to understand others and make others understand. And since expression is part of human nature, man is able to contribute to his well-being and that of others through arts.

The power of art lies not in itself alone but also in man's capacity to appreciate it. A painting can be a masterpiece for one person and it can be just an image for another. The same is true for billboards, posters, films, etc. They can just be images for the untrained eye. But for a person or a community that can appreciate them, they are beyond what they seem. And with recognition, they become powerful enough to catalyze change.
