Understanding The Hype On The WhistleBlower Hotline
by Ethel Harris
Lately, there are talks about a whistleblower hotline that are circulating among the private and public sectors. Normally, people would associate this term to cases wherein witnesses would like to report a knowledge of a crime that has been committed. This is not even limited to court, because even in the office set up, especially big corporations, this can happen any time.
Intellectual debates always surface when it comes to the issue of crime. There are definitions of a whistleblower that involve the citing of an employee as a witness who would report to the media for any wrongful acts. As a result, this would be then brought up in public and an investigation will be initiated.
Inexcusable acts occur because some people are afraid to speak up. Unfortunately, some also think that it has become the norm, therefore they pass up the opportunity to bring it up. Turning a blind eye can be unhealthy, and it is only through this means that damage to resources and humans can be lessened and monitored.
This mechanism could work either way. Whereas companies may be accused of the misuse of funds, employees can also resort to fraudulent activities for the purpose of gaining power or getting more than their fair share. Indeed the issue of money can result into numerous motivations for crimes. Therefore, everyone is advised to be vigilant, and often this is too much of a demand because of fear.
When you backtrack through history, people were aware of ethical grounds, therefore the method of confession is done out of ethical considerations. They believed that good deeds should prevail, and anyone who has committed a crime should receive punishment. In present times however, there is also no denying that money could be a big factor in convincing one to tell the truth.
In most cases, this is understandable because no one would want to take the risk without having the security that the act of bravery will be rewarded. There are different motivations for how humans act. No matter how anyone puts it, the fact remains that good conscience should also be reason enough to come forward and tell the truth.
Basically, whistleblowers are responsible for relevant exposes about certain conducts in companies or organizations that are unethical in the eyes of the law. True enough, there are certain practices that should be altered or stopped altogether because a good number of people, even the public, are unknowingly suffering the consequences. With this, the purpose should be more than just a stir in the public, because the only way to correct the misconduct is to see to it that the complete reversal is of long term use.
Compared to before, witnesses now have better compensation. Meaning, they get a substantial amount of money while also being guaranteed protection by security personnel, especially for high profile cases. Way back then, witnesses often suffered for their actions, and this was the main reason why others preferred to keep silent than face the dangerous consequences.
The sad truth is that fraudulent acts will always exist, especially in just small gestures. Money is the root of all evil, and even if it can grant material satisfaction to people, it can also make ambitious beasts out of individuals. Therefore, the whistleblower hotline is setup to make sure that witnesses get brave enough to speak, especially with their anonymity.
