What's the Difference Between High Quality and Cheap Business Cards
by James Tuta
In an era where there are so many printers around providing endless options of stock, laminate, size, material, and even shape It can really be a daunting task when your boss asks you to go on the internet and print them some new business cards. To help you make this decision a bit easier I have put together some information to help distinguish between premium and cheap business cards.
The best way to approach this is by deciding whether you need cheap or high quality, premium cards. Will you be using the cards as an effective mass marketing promo tool such as a loyalty card? Or will you be using them to get your contact details in the hands of potential clients and want the to be a symbol of the high quality of your work?
Now that you have worked out what you will be using the card for, you will need have a good understanding of what makes it high or low quality. The first thing to look at is the thickness of the stock, generally the heavier the better when it comes to business cards. Light weight stocks can feel cheap and it is even possible to see the artwork on the other side when held up to the sun. If it is a premium card that you want, find a supplier that prints on 400GSM. This stock is much more durable and less likely to crease or tear. The added weight also gives it the feeling of quality.
Next you need to decide on a laminate option. Most printers will offer either matt or gloss on one or two sides as well as an un-laminated option. Now, selecting this can really be dependent on the design and the colours used as well as the purpose of the card. If you need to write appointment times or stamp the back of the card you will be better off with a card that only has laminate on one side or an un-laminated card. If your design allows a double-sided laminate definitely go for it as the cards will look much better. If you are just using your cards for promotional material you could easily get away with an un-laminated option. When deciding on whether to choose a gloss or matte laminate it may be best to speak to your graphic designer as they will have a good idea of what will work best with the design.
Many printers offer a Spot UV finishing option that will allow you to highlight areas of the design. If you use this technique correctly it will really add an element to the cards that will make them standout. Having an experienced graphic designer work on this is key to making it work.
The printed dimensions of the card can also make a difference to how the card turns out. A standard size business card in Australia is usually either 90x55mm or 86x54mm. If you are really wanting something that will stand out you should think about maybe trying a slimmer size or even a square shape card. This can really have an impact when handing them out.
To sum all this up, if it's high quality business cards that you need, make sure you go with a heavy stock or about 400GSM, if your design allows for it go with a double sided laminate and maybe add some spot UV highlighting to the design and go with a slimmer sized card. If you get all this I promise you will not be disappointed!
