How To Create A Mobile Site And Make It Searchable

by Adrienne Fisher

People these days have the option communicate and transact business through mobile computing procedures. One obvious reason of this phenomenon is the boom of the smart phone industry all over the world. Smart phones are handy and these gadgets allow anyone to browse web pages, access e-mails, view videos, and document editing--- activities that used to be done only with desktop computers. This is why web masters consider it important to make a version of their desktop sites for smart phone users.

Creating a mobile site and making it rank on search engines is not an easy thing to do, however. For one, it uses a different format for the web content to be viewed properly on mobile phones. Second, it requires a different kind of expertise and management scheme. And third, web owners should know how Google treats mobile sites as far as indexing and ranking is concerned. Yes, web administrators should consider optimizing for Google because is the biggest search engine company to date.

But of course there are a few similar requirements that web administrators will encounter when creating web pages for mobile phones and desktop computers. An example of this is the need to create a sitemap and then submit it to Google to make it aware of its existence. Just like the standard sitemap, a sitemap of a mobile site can be submitted using Google Webmaster Tools.

Googlebot-mobile, Google's crawler for mobile, should also be allowed to search both the on and off page content of a particular mobile site. The information that the Googlebot will gather is used in determining whether a website or web page will be included in Google's searchable index.

Google may change its User-agent without prior notice. A solution Google offers to web master is to check if the User-agent header consist of the string Googlebot-Mobile. It is a more reliable option than checking whether the User-agent matches the current User-agent.

Ensuring that the format is compatible for mobile sites is another major consideration when creating a mobile site. Only mobile sites that are in compatible format will be added to Google's searchable index. Examples of compatible format for mobile sites include XHTML Mobile and Compact HTML.
