Making Hip-Hop Beats For Sale (Purchase Beats): The Sequencer
by Frank Lubsey
Today, we will discuss the sequencer and it's important purpose in hip-hop production. The sequencer allows one to be a virtual conductor. Typically, producers have an arsenal of sounds consisting of virtual instruments, hardware instruments, and audio recordings that they use in a track. A sequencer gives the producer the ability to control all of these parts in order to make one cohesive song.
The choice of a sequencer is one of the most important choices that a producer can make for the following reason. Often, for a producer to record a sound in his/her studio, he typically must interact with the sequencer first. Thus, a producer must feel at one with the workflow that a sequencer provides. If the workflow is not conducive to the producer's needs, making music will be a chore for the producer. If the workflow complements the way a producer likes to work, making music will be a seamless and enjoyable process. It is for this reason that a producer should really spend time trying out and testing different sequencer programs in order to find one that he likes. Sequencers generally fall into 2 categories.
Linear: In a linear sequencer, you construct each track in a song from beginning to end. Each track and every part must be programmed from the intro until the end of a song. For parts that repeat constantly, you can usually copy and past or duplicate the same song over and over again until it repeats. This is the classic sequencer and is found on programs such as Cubase, Pro Tools, and Sonar.
Pattern Based: This form of sequencer is more loop oriented. Instead of building a song from beginning to end, you instead build individual parts of a song consisting of multiple loops. For example, in part one, you make have a drum loop, a bass loop, and a guitar loop playing. In part 2, you may have only the drum loop playing. After you've constructed your parts, you sequence the parts in the order you choose to construct a song. This form of sequencing is found in programs such as Fruity Loops and Maschine.
Choosing a sequencer is definitely a personal decision and each producer will have their own preference of which program they'd like to use. However, for the purposes of hip-hop, I'd highly suggest to use a pattern based program. This type of program really complements the standard workflow of hip-hop, so I'd really give them a try before making a final purchase.
Whatever your choice of sequencer may be, a producer should thoroughly research the sequencer program before making a purchase. The choice of sequencer will have a tremendous effect on the music you make.
