Becoming A Wedding DJ: How To
by Matthew Strong
There are several things that need to be looked into when becoming a wedding DJ. Many tips will be listed here that will assist anyone on an easier journey in achieving this goal. It will help also to keep a running checklist while following the guidelines.
One of the most important things about being a DJ is having a diverse music collection. This is even more crucial when becoming a wedding DJ. Due to the fact that the DJ is not playing to a specific crowd - like in a hip hop club for example - he or she will need to have multiple types of music by various types of artists.
The bride and groom and their family will obviously have specific requests for special moments and dances at the reception. The guests will most likely be quite diverse in terms of what music they enjoy. Once the alcohol flows, everyone will be asking for their favorite song.
Many of the first songs played at the reception will include bittersweet moments. The bride will often dance with her father and the groom with his mother (or the people that have filled those roles for them). This means that it will help to have sentimental songs geared to these dances.
The bride and groom will have their first dance together. It will help to have a variety of songs ready for their request. If they ask for something that is not already owned, the DJ should work hard to acquire it. Often these songs will be older or even oldies as opposed to popular contemporary music.
Many guests will actually start to move onto the floor with funny group songs like "The Hokey Pokey". Often many will respond to classic hip hop songs as well, even older folks. Also, young and old guests alike may request ballroom, foxtrot, tango, or waltz appropriate songs. The bride and groom may have even learned some of those dances for the wedding.
Funny dance games are something a wedding DJ will need to know, and he or she will also need corresponding music for these. Many of these games involve giving the bride and groom money for their honeymoon. A good luck dance can be done to encourage everyone to get onto the dance floor.
If one is not already skilled at DJing, they will want to take radio production classes or the like. Not only will these teach mixing skills and the like, often these classes will teach lighting techniques and other skills.
Forms for contracts can be downloaded online for free. This is necessary to make sure that if things are cancelled or the couple tries to pull out randomly, the DJ will still get paid. Often plans are made months in advance, and counting on a gig is important. Working on becoming a good public speaker or entertainer type is good as well. Toasts and the like can learned online as well.
DJ equipment can be obtained cheaper by renting or purchasing used equipment. Needs include speakers, CD players, lights, and of course turntables. Often the events venue management will let a DJ borrow some equipment when they are just starting out. Some will have some lights and sounds items already in place.
These are all some basic ways to get the ball rolling in becoming a wedding DJ.
