Using Conference Interpretation To Understand A Foreign Language

by Patrice McCoy

As the world shrinks, it is becoming a global village. The meetings between people speaking different tongues are on the rise. It is not possible for each person in multinational meetings to understand the language spoken by every participant. This is where conference interpretation steps up and ensures each participant can speak in his own mother tongue while listening to others who speak differently.

Conference explanation deals only with oral communication. Sometimes this is loosely called translation which is erroneous. Translation deals with the written word and is not done in real time and has the aid of dictionaries. Interpretation is not translation of each and every word but the conveying of the message of the speaker along with his passion and fervor.

The explanation can be done in a variety of ways. The most common mode is 'simultaneous interpretation'. The interpreter sits in a soundproof box from where the speaker can be seen. He listens to whoever is talking and then speaks into a microphone in the target language and is heard by a participant by selecting his channel. The speaker continues speaking without any noticeable break.

Another mode is called 'consecutive interpretation'. Here the one who is talking is aware of the translation process and pauses after speaking for up to 10 minutes. The interpreter makes notes of important points. When the speaker pauses, he speaks and conveys the message in the target dialect. This mode tends to be used in meetings with high technical content.

As the number of languages in play increases, it becomes impossible to get interpreters who can handle all the tongues being spoken. This is solved by interpreting to a few of the well known languages which are then conveyed to every target language by a second set of interpreters. This process is called 'relay'.

The language understood by the interpreter and which he interprets, is called his 'passive' language and the language he speaks in is called his 'active' language. It is possible to have interpretations available in all the languages that are spoken by the participants. This is called 'symmetric regime'.

Sometimes advantage is taken by the fact that all participants can understand several languages while they deliver speeches in their own language. By selecting a smaller set of languages that ensure everyone can understand, the demands on the interpreter decreases. This mode is called an 'asymmetric regime'. For example a 5-2 language regime will have all speakers talking in one of the 5 tongues. However, the interpretation is only done in the 2 languages that cover the entire audience.

Sometimes the audience may be composed of deaf and blind people. A sign language expert stands close to the deaf people and turn the spoken word into gesture language. It is possible to have a deaf interpreter who follows the sign language and copies the content on the hand of a blind person.

Planet Earth with a plethora of languages demands a secure mode for error free communication to prevent misunderstanding and confusion. Conference interpretation has stepped up to this tremendous challenge and handled it with the help of competent interpreters. Thus the message of speaker in one language is clearly understood by all his listeners even though speak a different tongue.
