The Responsibilities Of A Sign Language Interpreter
by Christina Potter
A sign language interpreter is someone who translates messages between a deaf and a hearing person. In other words, he helps them converse by making both parties understand each other. For this, interpreters use signing to pass messages to either party; therefore, they should not be deaf, and should learn signing so as to represent both parties when communicating.
This might be challenging at times, especially when one party is throwing frustration to the other and the interpreter is expected to pass the message. However, it is all about making both parties come in to an agreement in whatever subject they are discussing. Interpreting sign language is now considered a profession, as deaf people are involved in the corporate world. For this they need people to help them pass their messages.
Being able to communicate is very important especially when people understand each other; therefore, agreements and disagreement are not cause by misunderstanding but opinions. One needs to be close with their interpreter in order to get used to their signing. As much as people may know how to sign they should get used to their partners signing and see how they hold their figure for fluency purposes during a conversation.
Nowadays, there are firms that provide interpretation and translation services to individuals, organizations, and in functions. They have interpreters who are hired to these tasks and are paid according to their skills. By skills it means their ability to sign fast and their understanding of many languages. The deaf have an added advantage when it come to communication as they can see the people they are communicating with, and can tell whether the conversation is going well.
The deaf or rather the hearing person should be able to trust their partner and the message they pass. If not, one may have wrong intentions and therefore pass wrong message with the aim of jeopardizing the conversation.
Being partners they should have understanding of their responsibilities and come up with a way of dealing with their differences or rather disagreement, otherwise, such cases might scare the other party making them leave.
