Don't Forget the Potential Profits Direct Mail Brings to Your Table

by Jonathan Spears

A lot of Internet marketers have failed to make use of direct mail for their marketing efforts. In fact, many of them don't even think of it at all. However, when you do it right, direct mail can bring a huge amount of profitability to your business. But you have to know what you're doing to make it work out for you. If you don't get it right from the start you'll be wasting a large pile of paper, toner, time, and patience. But, if you follow the right steps you'll never have to worry about that particular outcome. Direct mail has a lot of potential rewards to offer and these tips can help you get to them faster while avoiding a lot of the potential pitfalls.

This should go without saying but an awful lot of Internet Marketers still forget to do it (or simply choose not to). Always take a moment to proofread and edit your direct mail material before you send it out. Don't just check your grammar. Pour over every single word to make sure you're saying what you intend to say. You need to add a little bit of polish to the best possible extent. A good rule of thumb is that you need to do at least three proofreading and editing sessions for every page before you send anything out. All it takes is one typo to send a perfectly good direct mail campaign down the tubes. If you are uncertain at all about your ability to proofread your work then you should really think long and hard about the benefits of hiring someone to professional proof or edit your work.

Direct mail is kind of like email in that you need to send out more than one if you expect to get a good result from it. You probably send out email campaigns that include at least three separate mailings, right? Do the same thing with your direct mail. You don't have to send these super close together. Once per week or so should be enough. Send anywhere from three to five direct mail letters before you decide to switch things around with a new follow up technique. It's important that they have a chance to remember your name before you reach out to them.

Never send a single piece of direct mail without a follow up plan in place. If you have the phone numbers, a phone call might be the perfect solution though follow up can be done with a secondary mailing. This shows your dedication to them as well as your services. Obviously this is easier to do when you are sending your direct mail out in small batches at a time. Of course that doesn't change the fact that it really makes a positive impression. Don't get technical or dry just let them know about the mail you've sent and ask what their thoughts may be. It's little things like this that convert someone thinking about doing business with you into a paying customer.

The rumors of the death of direct mail have been greatly exaggerated. This is one claim you should definitely ignore. It's been forgotten by and large in favor of the promise of faster results in the electronic age. Sometimes a well written piece of direct mail is all you need to take your business from "okay" profitability to "wow, look how much money I'm making!"
