Summarising The Victorian Era In The UK
by Ashley Anderson
One of the most impressive times for the United Kingdom is the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria sat on the throne. Because of the many changes and innovations made possible during this period, it would seem like Britain had its own Renaissance during the rule of Queen Victoria. The Victorian era is characterised by significant social changes and marked cultural development. Morals were held in high regard, and the Empire was in considerable peace for the whole time that Queen Victoria sat on the throne. In fact, the Victorian era was also otherwise known as the Pax Britannica, or British Peace. There were, of course, other significant developments in Britain introduced during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Art, for instance, experienced a surge in style. One good example is the Gothic style of architecture, as it was successfully revived by designers in the Victorian era. Because it clashed with the established Classical design and style, the re-emergence of Gothic architecture paved the way for the Battle of the Styles. Do not take the word "battle" literally of course; the conflict was expressed in public debates between the two camps, and sometimes in written criticism. The Victorian era marked differing cultural views between classical and gothic styles. Critics of the Classical camp considered the style as too typical, and even too mechanic that it is almost without life. Proponents of the Gothic style state that the moral sensibilities and changes during the Victorian era were reflected well in the Gothic style of architecture. Vernacular architecture would later on emerge, and add to the already populate palette of styles available to artists. Though the artists bickered amongst each other during those days, what remains true is that, during this period, people had a diverse choice of styles that they could mull over for their structures.
It was also during the Victorian era that photography appeared for the first time in Britain. The British people were first introduced to photography during the Great Exhibit in 1851, where they held in exhibit the different inventions from people from the world over. Queen Victoria is also recalled as being the first Queen to have a photograph taken using the new technology. Photography also had a profound effect on paintings and portraits, with many artists deciding to base their styles on actual photographs. For instance, artist John Everett Millais created portraits that are directly influenced by the new technology.|One such artist is John Everett Millais, whose artwork based on people bore close likeness to photographs.
Art is definitely expressed in jewellery, and the Victorian era is greatly remembered for that. Jewellery is a hobby or a passion for the Queen Herself. While Georgian jewellery died naturally under the light of the gas light, Victorian jewellery were made specifically to retain its luster under the new type of light used during the era.
Indeed, the Victorian era is a time of evolution in art, technology as well as culture. One should be able to see these changes and cultural impacts if they are able to purchase for themselves some antique Victorian jewelleries. Nowadays, Victorian jewellery pieces are some of the most sought-after articles of jewellery amongst aficionados. There is great worth behind each antique that was made during the Victorian era, making each piece highly sought after by collectors.
