What Is Mmorpg?

by Larry Sabler

The MMORPG means Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play(ing) Game which is a game played in computers by thousands or millions of players from all the corners of the world.

The unique feature is that the player can choose his/her role and persona and play the part, and sets a goal that the part must accomplish in a make believe world. This world supposedly exists and is to be found in a permanent server and players in their assumed roles do their things inside this world. If one player is not playing, this virtual world will continue to exist with the presence of other active players. It is in this respect that the MMORPGs is similar to the real - and existing world.

For example, in World of Warcraft episode, a viral outbreak was caused by a spell that made players sick and infected all the other players. The disease effect got out of hand and as players ran back to towns and cities the virus spread and became an epidemic. Later, a patch was released to remedy the problem, but the community was shocked at how closely the behavior seen in the game resembled real life.

MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and Guildwars have fantasy and mythical themes with an abundance of magical spells and super powers. Some are based in space, where you must command a spacecraft or your own planet. Some are even based on the real world, and with the invention of Google maps it may well be possible to have an MMORPG world which closely emulates the real world, perhaps even being able to visit your own home!

MUDs, or Multi-User Dungeons, were the first. They are usually simple text based programs where the players use commands to control and interact with their character, the world, and other players. The game is comparatively simple compared to the latter games, but are also played with 2D graphical versions and 3D MUDs. The browser based MMORPGs are somewhat similar to MUDs, and are played only in the user's browser, e.g, RuneScape. The programs of these are text based, and some are in 3Ds, and just like the newer MMORPGs are practical to use, and most can be played for free.

MMORPGs gained prominence about a decade ago and are today a popular choice of many online players. Worldwide, they are earning billions and the total take is rising year after year.
