29Prime: Malware Checkpoint Added to Facebook

by Jessica Stevenson

Last Monday, July 9th, the government did the unthinkable. They shut down the Internet. At 12:01AM EDT, the FBI temporarily shut down Internet servers that were created as a safety night for infected computers that have been online for the past eight months. A little over a year ago, malware took over thousands of computers across the globe.

This day, now known as 'Malware Monday', has caused thousands of people to frantically attempt to protect their computers from this virus. You probably did not notice the shut down because it happened to only 40,000 people in the United States. According to the Internet World Statistics, around 2.3 billion people use the Internet globally.

The largest social media website in the world, Facebook, decided to take action against malware. The new feature allows Facebook users to perform malware scans on their accounts. This is especially important for business owners who believe their pages may be compromised. As a business owner, your social media accounts should always be clean and not contain spam.

Currently, Facebook has a scanner that can detect suspicious activity from an account. These accounts are temporarily shut down and require the user to go through an account recovery process. This requires the user to download and use the McAfee Scan and Repair. Once this is completed, the account owner will be able to access their account again. Facebook users do not have to wait until their account is infected to run this scanner, they can do so whenever they like!

As a business owner, you should constantly monitor and protect your social media websites. Typically, your followers will turn to these websites for up-to-date information about your company and the services you provide. If you're not protected against viruses, you risk infecting the computer systems of your consumers. Utilize this new tool to protect yourself and your business!
