A Guide to Developing Negotiation Skills that can Help Your Business Thrive
by Tyler Brotheridge
Securing a companies business requires more effort than simple selling skills. Decent negotiation skills will help improve your businesses sales margins by supplying your employees with an invaluable skill-set, which will help them close deals with confidence and clarity. A sales consultants job is to teach their clients these skills, skills that will help their companies stand head and shoulders above the competition.
It might be tempting to see negotiation skills as merely a facet of general sales but in actual fact they are a fare more intricate art. A sales consultancy will be able to teach your employees the following skills: -
* How to gather a detailed understanding of offers
* A crash course in customer psychology that will lend an insight into how the average customer thinks and feels.
* How to develop fantastic listening skills
* The skills to learn the differences between what customers might 'say' they want and what they 'actually' want.
* A run-down of common business tactics that are used in most negotiations.
All negotiations in the business world will be segregated into stages and the courses offered by a sales consultancy will be similarly divided into 6 or 7 stages. These stages are explored in more detail below.
Any business negotiation will generally be split into stages and a negotiation skills course will also be structured as such. Firstly the objectives for the course will be set out for you, the participants. During the initial negotiation the sales consultants will set out the various stages to an average negotiation and will take you through them.
Next there will be a preparation stage, where the plus and minus points of both sides will be examined. It's important in this stage to remain as unbiased as possible so as to remain completely subjective and open to learning new skills. This is followed by the 'discussion' section, where you will learn how to discuss the options available to your potential customers, be that with rival companies (favorably of course) or other options inside your company.
The proposal stage will help you examine how to most accurately put across your ideas to potential clients or buyers. Here you'll be taught how to mix up and change various components in your offer, potentially making compromises in order to close a deal. Finally you'll be taught how to ensure that both sides agree to the terms set out but the agreement. This is the final stage of the negotiation.
Once all these stages have been discussed your employees will be taught how to finalize a deal, making sure that both sides agree to the terms of the deal. The final goal of the consultancy is of course to lend their clients the negotiation skills necessary to make fair successful big business deals in any capacity. At the end of the course a unique framework will be written up and this framework can be referred to in future circumstances to make sure a company is always negotiating to it's full potential.
