The Ways A Website Can Make A Difference To Your Bottom Line
by Brent Peterson
Are you using your website to its fullest potential? While having a website is a great idea, the truth is that your website really needs to be more than a business card for your company on the web. But what can a website do for your business and where are many websites failing in this struggling economy?
Sure, the clients that you have now may find your website when they're in a pinch and they forget what your telephone number is but do you know how you can use a website to build your business? Once upon a time, people would search in the phone book for businesses in their local area. Now your customers will be searching the internet for everything from dry cleaners to divorce lawyers and everything in between. How can you ensure that those paying customers find your website over your competition?
While a pretty website is important and brings along with it a sense of pride, it is actually secondary to a properly optimized website. A properly optimized website is one that has key elements within it that tell search engines what your website is about and thus is ranked higher in search engine results when your potential client starts searching for your help in solving whatever problem they might have.
Let's say that a disgruntled housewife has just found lipstick on her husband's shirt for the fifteenth time. She's hopping mad and she wants to find a good divorce attorney and fast. Or what if a tree comes down on a homeowners roof in the middle of the night and he needs a roofer to take care of the problem as fast as possible. The first thing that these two people are going to do is to search online for someone locally to take care of their problem. They're not going to go digging for a newspaper or through the mail looking for a coupon. They're going to find a solution to their problem online.
But will these people find you through your website? If your website is constructed like most then sadly they won't. If your website is on page eight for the words that they are typing into the search engine then they won't even know that you're on the planet, never-mind just across town.
I don't want to say that all people are this way but basically human beings are lazy. The less work they have to do the better and this is the reason why the number one spot for any series of keywords gets the lion share of clicks and attention. The difference between having that top spot and even being in the third spot is like night and day and that is why you should always be shooting for that number one spot for any keyword that buyers use to find your particular business. Once you experience this you will know it without even having to check where your website is ranking for a good keyword.
A cleverly built website that has both internal and external elements that tell search engines that your site is very popular for a particular set of keywords will get you those top rankings. Now, even though many SEO firms might say that they have years of experience in helping companies to get those ranking, very few will actually deliver on this promise and help you to maintain those top rankings.
