Key Elements Of Leadership Effectiveness Analysis
by Freida Lamb
The leadership effectiveness analysis (LEA) process assesses leaders' strengths and shortcomings in five key areas. These five elements are about creating a vision, developing followers, implementing said vision, follow through and team playing. Each of these elements has between three to seven traits or practices.
Each of these 22 practices has to be analyzed and scored individually, and then put together to make up a total profile. Feedback is provided by peers, bosses and direct reports only. Self-feedback provided by the leader is also a part of the mix.
The final LEA report should not be looked at as a report card or performance review. Think of it as a guiding document that shows how others perceive the subject. It can be used for behavioral course corrections and will definitely improve management relations.
When an LEA subject tries to do better in certain areas based on the LEA scores, it lets people know that their feedback is valued. But ultimately the main benefit is reserved for the subjects themselves. Consider the individual traits within the first element aka 'creating a vision.' Two of them are traditional and innovative vision, and the other three are technical, strategic and self vision.
Under traditional vision, leaders are expected to be aware of past practices and use this knowledge to deal with problems in a way that minimizes risk and preserves the status quo. On the other hand, innovative vision calls for trying out untested solutions in a fast-changing situation with no precedent. An LEA may turn up evidence that a leader who scores high for innovative vision may not be doing so well for traditional vision, or the other way round.
This awareness can help the subjects open their minds and deal with a situation on its merits instead of following a preferred leadership style. This was just one benefit gained by looking at two leadership effectiveness analysis traits side by side. There are 22 such traits under the five key elements, which creates a lot of potential for beneficial change.
