Spiritual Connections With Native American Artwork

by Thelma Kent

Few things evoke a sense of history and poignant emotions like Native American artwork. The traditional styles that most art pieces offer can bring out a true sense of spirituality in anyone who views them. Some pieces are done in professional European style or classic mediums. Others are pen and ink and straight from the hands of the native first nations people themselves.

Historic and full of legends and tales, the very first people to walk North American soil trace their lineage far back. Having come over a land bridge through the Bering Strait in prehistoric times, they are practically descended from ancient cave man. Their stories run thick in the forests and rivers of the land.

Art has always been a strong part of indigenous culture. Many different cultures the world over have used art to invoke their gods, to send messages and prayers to heavenly sky beings, and to leave the mark of their belief system on the world. Cave paintings show modern people how those now lost to time lived, as well as what they valued and what they believed in.

Indigenous people produce art as baskets specially woven with different designs, or something more complex like sand painting. Many such artists have made a switch to the more accepted formats of canvas or even illustration board. Now their masterpieces can be hung up in sophisticated art collector galleries.

Most native arts on canvas or board demonstrate a unique style specific to a given culture. Images often include people and animals, rather than scenic vistas of the land around them. Because of their inherent ability to understand the world and its web like connections to everything, natives often create artwork that evokes that connection and focuses on spirits of animals or people, or even their gods.

The mythos around native american artwork is very intense. No two pieces are the same unless they are copied prints. Each piece is unique and demonstrates a part of their culture they do not wish to lose to modern styles and traditions.
