A Brief Explanation of the EU Cookie Directive
by Aimee H. Noble
In case you were about to get excited, the cookie directive is about internet cookies, not anything you can put in your mouth. It's part of the wave of governments feeling that 'something must be done' about the internet. It's unclear exactly what these legislators would like the internet to be exactly, but the idea of gnawing away at the aspects that make up this free information network seems to have gained a lot of momentum. The US got far enough to have a bill put together which would have stripped away much of the freedom that the creative aspects of the internet enjoy.
Cookies are now in the firing line. You may know these as the thing your browser or virus scan blocks. They're the trackers of the internet, amassing swathes of data on the sites people visit and the things they search for. This information can be very valuable to companies, as it allows them to see if their marketing is working, and what people are buying, and it can help them target you with advertising too. It also helps you access information more easily, such as allowing you in to your email without a password, or remembering items you want to buy.
The legislation for the EU cookie directive was put in force officially last year, but then they said they wouldn't enforce it until May 26th of this year. Nobody really seems to be getting all that worried about it just yet, as it's unclear exactly how the EU intends to enforce this law anyway. But the idea is that you, as a user, will always have to opt in for a site to give your viewing details over to a third party cookie.
The law has been in for a while now, but it won't be 'enforced' until the 26th May 2012. As yet it's not clear how this enforcement will work. If no one abides by it, it may certainly be a big task to prosecute everyone. And businesses really aren't happy to play along. It will impede commerce at a time when we really need it to remain on its feet.
There is something perversely satisfying about companies being worn down by the same uncaring nature of the internet that allowed them to thrive, but that hardly seems like a good enough reason on its own for this new directive.
