The Significance Of Halal Certification
by Melissa Smith
For companies that are involved in the manufacturing, storage or delivery of food products, obtaining the right food certification is going to be important to not only the success of their operations, but also their ability to sell these products to the general public. There are many laws and standards that govern food production and service and customers will want to see that these are being met in the items that they purchase.
The Muslim community is the largest and youngest religious community in the UK and therefore there's a large requirement for Halal food products. The word Halal means lawful or permitted and basically refers to those items that are acceptable under Islamic dietary guidelines. This dietary law applies particularly to meat and poultry as it lays out the slaughtering practices which are acceptable. It also takes into account the fact that Muslims cannot eat pork or pork by products or consume animal blood.
Halal certification can be gained by companies completing an application form stating information about their food manufacture, storage and service operations. The company premises will then have to be audited by a Halal Authority Board approved auditor to ensure they fulfill the right levels of quality and service in order to be recommended for and ultimately awarded the suitable certification status.
It is known that there are around 3 million Halal consumers in the UK and thus a wide ranging requirement for halal certified products whether these be pizzas, breakfast cereals, sweets or pre-packed sandwiches. Halal consumers need to know that the food items they are buying meet with the policies acceptable within their religion.
By working closely with an approved food certification company, those businesses who hope to sell Halal products can make sure that the way in which their food items are prepared, stored and served to consumers meets the Halal certification guidelines and thus set them on the path to gaining this certification which will demonstrate their accreditation to customers.
