There are lots of different tasks that an SEO consultant is responsible for carrying out. Getting clients higher up on the search engines, choosing keyword phrases, rewriting website content, obtaining links and educating clients are just some of the tasks involved.
When asked for a shortened description of the job role of an SEO the most common function is to monitor a website's overall performance and implement any changes as required.
Successful candidates usually have a strong background in analytical thinking and good knowledge of online marketing tools. Search engine consultants are required to produce daily, weekly and monthly reports in order to benchmark the success of a campaign.
The essential functions of the job include; monitoring, tracking and reporting on search metrics. Providing support for the general marketing team, interacting with copywriters and presenting results.
Depending on the type of SEO role you are applying for, sometimes it is important to go into more detail. Other actions include; creating backlink reports, internal link optimization, website copywriting, keyword research, competitor analysis, researching the latest SEO trends.
The qualifications you need to work in SEO are often negotiable. Lots of SEO workers have degrees in business or marketing although this is not essential. Having previously online marketing experience is a big positive and a direct marketing background will also be beneficial. It is important to be self-motivated and have a good eye for detail.
Good communication skills are also required for SEO executives as it is important to be able to show results to management. Working in SEO is often referred to as 'plate spinning' due to the nature of the job. If one particular area is neglected it can result in the campaign becoming less successful.
Obviously it is essential that anybody considering a role in SEO is proficient in Microsoft word, Excel and PowerPoint.
